The Missouri Tigers continue their rebuild in the 2020 college football season.

Missouri had a forgettable football campaign in 2019. The Tigers finished 6-6 overall and 3-5 in a tough SEC, but missed out on postseason play due to an NCAA ban stemming from academic misconduct allegations. Missouri will try to put that behind them in 2020 while they continue their quest to get back to a bowl game.Check back all season long for free college football picks and college football predictions at Sports Chat Place.

Let’s take a closer look at Missouri’s current status and break down their chances at becoming bowl eligible this year.

Head coach Barry Odom’s final year with Missouri was a tale of two halves: the Tigers started out great after an opener loss to Wyoming, going 5-1 over the first half-dozen games. Five straight losses followed, and Missouri was just barely able to eke out six wins with a victory over Arkansas in the final game. The Tigers had actually crawled into the No. 22 ranked spot prior to the Vanderbilt game, but the losing streak made quick work of that. All in all, it was just an unsatisfying year.

In any case, 2020 brings a new regime with new head coach Eliah Drinkwitz in his first season. He’ll be pulling OC duties as well, and will have his hands full evaluating the best-fitting talent on the roster. Drinkwitz has described Missouri’s new offensive style as “pro-tempo,” “no-huddle” and “quarterback driven,” which are some lofty phrases for a team without a clear-cut starting QB. Shawn Robinson is probably the early favorite, but expect to hear names like Connor Bazelak, Brady Cook and Taylor Powell this summer as the roster decisions are made.

Schedule-wise, it’s going to be a pretty interesting year for Missouri. They’ll open up with a reasonable matchup versus Central Arkansas, then have three winnable games going into a tricky stretch at Tennessee, at BYU, then home against Georgia and Kentucky before the bye. There’s a tough-looking game at Florida in mid-November, but otherwise the quartet of post-bye games aren’t too intimidating.

Pick: I like the over. It’s not that I think Missouri will be a great team this year, but the schedule is accommodating enough that six wins and a bowl appearance seems achievable (even after a coaching change and the weirdest offseason ever). If the Tigers can rattle off four wins or so before the bye week they’ll be in good position to get to six or even seven victories, which would be a major turnaround for this embattled program. Regardless, it should be a very interesting football season in Missouri.
