Breaking Down the East Carolina Pirates Win Total
2020 College Football Season
East Carolina Pirates: 3.5 Wins -- Title Odds: 500/1
The East Carolina Pirtates look to put last season behind them as they set their sights on the 2020 college football season.
East Carolina’s 2019 football campaign didn’t go so well. The Pirates went 4-8 overall and 1-7 in a tough American Athletic Conference, leaving the team one spot out of the basement in the East Division. In 2020, East Carolina will try to show some improvement on the field and in the record column as they work toward relevance in the AAC. Let’s take a closer look at East Carolina’s current status and break down their chances at hitting four victories this season.
The Pirates started out choppy last season with blowout losses at NC State and Navy, but were 3-2 at the end of September. Five straight losses followed, but oddly enough East Carolina was competitive in the toughest games versus Cincinnati (46-43) and at SMU (59-51). In any case, a road win versus a bad UConn team was the only other bright spot in an otherwise forgettable season, and the Pirates are ready to move on.
Looking at 2020, East Carolina returns head coach Mike Houston for his second season and a new defensive coordinator in Blake Harrell. Their crew has a lot of work to do in order to make this roster competitive at the current AAC level, but there’s some good news here. Junior QB Holton Ahlers returns this season, and overall 83 percent of the team is back in 2020. That number bodes well for experience and playing speed for the Pirates this year.
Looking at the 2020 schedule, East Carolina has some really intimidating matchups. That said, there are plenty of opportunities for victories as well, and if all goes according to plan the Pirates could even flirt with a bowl berth. ECU gets a relatively tame matchup against Marshall to open, then an extra week to prepare for a road game at South Carolina. Cincinnati, UCF, Temple and SMU all loom large, but teams like Norfolk State, Georgia State and Tulsa are winnable games for East Carolina.
Pick: I like the over. The bar here isn’t set terribly high, and East Carolina should be an improved team this season. I don’t know that they’ll get to that six-win threshold; it’s certainly possible but four or five wins seems more likely—and realistic—here. Either way, it’s a step forward for East Carolina, and a sign of brighter days to come. We should see plenty of improvement on the field from the Pirates in 2020, and they should move up the division standings.
