The Florida Gators are looking to dethrone Georgia atop the SEC East for the 2020 college football season.
Florida managed a really strong football campaign in 2019. The Gators marched to an 11-2 overall record and a 6-2 mark in a tough SEC, then won the Orange Bowl 36-28 versus Virginia. Florida is projected to be a double-digit win team once again in 2020, and they’ll certainly be in the mix for the conference title as well. Let’s take a closer look at Florida’s current status and break down their chances at hitting 11 wins this year.
The Gators began the 2019 campaign ranked No. 8 in the preseason AP Poll, and by the time the year was done the team had moved up a couple notches to No. 6; not too shabby. Florida’s only losses came to LSU 42-28 and Georgia 24-17. The Bulldogs game was the one that really stung, as it prevented Florida from taking the top spot in the East Division and—well, probably losing to LSU in the title game, but still. The Gators regrouped after that and won their last four games—none really being close.
On to 2020, and Florida head coach Dan Mullen enters his third year at the helm alongside OCs Billy Gonzales and John Hevesy, and DC Todd Grantham. The pressure is on that group to finally make a big push and dethrone Georgia from the division title. Fortunately, the Gators retain a key offensive piece this season in QB Kyle Trask (2,941 yards and 25 TDs last year). Outside of that, there are some impact players on both sides of the ball who have moved on, and Florida does have some really big talent gaps to fill after going second in the league in total defense and fourth in the SEC in total offense last season.
The good news about Florida’s schedule is that it ramps up rather slowly. The Kentucky game could be a little tricky, as those teams always seem to play tight, but then there are manageable outings versus South Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina after that. Florida will go into a tough stretch beginning with LSU (at home, thankfully), a new-look Ole Miss, a bye and then the showdown versus Georgia. Following that high-energy matchup, the remaining games don’t look as intimidating on paper.
Pick: I’m leaning toward the over. This is a tricky one, as I think 9-11 wins is just about right for this Gators team, depending on how the season goes. Florida has a workable schedule, an established system and enough talent on the roster to make another legitimate run at the division title this year. If all goes according to plan, who knows? LSU will be a different team and Florida was right alongside Georgia all of last year. The Gators could potentially sneak into an SEC championship under the right circumstances.
