The Memphis Tigers and Arkansas State Red Wolves kick off their college football season on Saturday at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. These two teams last faced off in 2013 when the TIgers came away with a 31-7 victory.
Arkansas State dealt with a lot of adversity last year, including the coaches' wife dying from cancer, but they still were able to find success finishing with an 8-5 record.. Five of those wins for Arkansas State came during conference play. The good news for the Red Wolves this season is they are a veteran loaded team, and the expectations are even higher for this season. Quarterback Layne Hatcher was a star last year for the Red Wolves throwing for 2,946 yards and 27 touchdowns. Logan Bonner had been a standout the year before so it’s unclear if Bonner or Hatcher will be the player to get the job.
On defense, the Red Wolves had issues overall but especially trying to slow down the run. The Tigers are a strong running team, so Arkansas State needs to find a way to improve on that side of the ball in this game, or this could be a long game.
On the other side of this matchup is the Memphis Tigers who found a lot of success during the 2019 season, but there are a lot of question marks. The 2019 season saw the Tigers win 12 games, but there are a lot of changes. The good news for Memphis is they get quarterback Brady White back who threw for 33 touchdowns last season. The wide receiving room has a lot of question marks, but White should make them better. One big concern for this squad is with the running game. Running back Kenneth Gainwell has opted out of the season due to COVID. On defense this is a squad that was strong last year, and a veteran led team.
The under is 11-4 in Arkansas State last 15 games as an underdog. The over is 20-7 in the Tigers last 27 home games. The over is 8-3 in the TIgers last 11 games overall. The over is 13-4 in the Tigers last 17 non-conference games.
Memphis likes to play a fast pace and that is going to lead to a lot of scoring in this game. Look for Memphis to run wild against Arkansas State defense and that will lead to plenty of scoring. Back the over to cash in this game.
