The Houston Baptist Huskies and the North Texas Mean Green meet Saturday in college football action from Apogee Stadium.
Houston Baptist is coming off a disappointing 2019 campaign. The team finished 5-7 on the year with a 2-6 record in Southland Conference play. That left the Huskies one spot out of the basement in the conference standings and out of postseason contention. As for North Texas, they fared even worse at 4-8 overall and 3-5 in Conference USA play. The Mean Green finished in fourth place in the West Division and missed out on a bowl opportunity. Houston Baptist was projected to finish last in the conference prior to the 2019 campaign, so the fact that the Huskies beat Lamar in the standings is one of the season’s only small victories. Things started out well enough for the Huskies at 4-1, but a five-game losing streak afterward pretty much sealed the team’s fate.
Head coach Vic Shealy will be back on the sideline for the Huskies in 2020 in his eighth season. He and the staff will have their hands full trying to get Houston Baptist to contender level, as this should be a competitive conference once again in 2020. The good news is that last year’s five wins are encouraging; that’s the most the program has ever had.
Over on the North Texas side, they were projected to win the West Division in 2019, but finished in fourth place in a disappointing effort. The Mean Green coughed up a ton of points consistently, and didn’t win consecutive games at all during the season.
This year, head coach Seth Littrell is back at the helm for his fifth season, and he’s got new faces on his staff in Mike Bloesch (co-OC) and Clint Bowen (defensive coordinator). They’re going to have a tough time reshaping the defense, as four of the team’s top six tacklers are gone.

Pick: I’m leaning North Texas here. This one’s tough though. Taking a look at the Mean Green’s situation—new coaches, new QB, new defense, new offensive line, etc.—it’s hard to think North Texas will get too many wins this season. That said, the roster on paper is still better than what Houston Baptist is working with. This may be a pretty close one as the Green get their legs back, but I think North Texas can pull off a cover.
