The BYU Cougars and Navy Midshipmen face off on Monday in what could be the most exciting college football game in Week 1 at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
The Navy Midshipmen found a whole lot of success during the 2019 season finishing with an 11-2 record overall and 7-1 in the American Conference. To end last season the Midshipmen beat the Kansas State Wildcats in the bowl game.
As much success as they had, this is a team that has a lot of questions heading into this year. Gone is quarterback Malcolm Perry who had one of the best seasons in team history. Perry Olsen is expected to take over as the starter and he is dynamic with his feet, but the expectation is that he can pass the ball a little better than Perry was able to. In this game if BYU wants to come away with a win, they are going to need to have the offense be strong early. On defense Navy was good last year, but a few of their key players are gone,
On the other side of this matchup is the BYU Cougars who had high expectations heading into the 2019 season but they only finished with seven wins. Seven wins is good for some teams but people were thinking nine or ten wins. The Cougars offense could have been more explosive after averaging 28.5 points per game and the hope is quarterback Zach Wilson will take another step forward. Last season WIlson threw for 2,382 yards and 11 touchdowns.
The Cougars defense last season was strong led by linebacker Kavika Fonua who could be a game changer for some team in the NFL.The good news for the Cougars is they have had all offseason to prepare for the triple option but they also have to be ready for the pass because Navy could be passing it more this season.
The over is 5-1 in BYU’s last six games played on Fieldturf. The over is 4-0 in the Midshipmen’s last four games as an underdog.
Navy runs the triple option but don’t let that fool you, they can put up runs in bunches. Look for both offenses to find success in this game and push it over the total.
