The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns and the Iowa State Cyclones meet Saturday in college football action from Jack Trice Stadium.
Louisiana is coming out of a successful campaign in 2019, going 11-3 overall and 7-1 in Sun Belt play for a first-place West Division finish. Though the Cajuns lost the conference championship to App State 45-38, they rebounded to win the LendingTree Bowl over Miami (OH) 27-17. As for Iowa State, they went 7-6 overall last year and 5-4 in the Big 12. The Cyclones made the Camping World Bowl but were blown out by Notre Dame in that one 33-9. The Cajuns started out with a loss to Mississippi State last season, but quickly rebounded for a four-game win streak. Appalachian State was Louisiana’s nemesis in 2019, as the Cajuns only other two losses came courtesy of the Mountaineers. There was a 17-7 loss October 9 and then the 45-38 loss in the conference championship.
There are high hopes for Louisiana going into 2020, as head coach Billy Napier enters his third season. He’ll be joined by third-year OC Rob Sale and new DC Patrick Toney in his third overall season. The staff has some talent to work with on both sides of the ball, as guys like Levi Lewis, Elijah Mitchell and Jalen Williams have been named to preseason award watch lists.
Over on the Iowa State side, they finished worse than they were projected in 2019, but did hang tough against difficult competition. The Cyclones dropped two of their first four games, 18-17 versus Iowa and 23-21 versus Baylor. Iowa State even hung with Oklahoma 42-41 in a tough loss a few weeks later. Overall, it was a forgettable season capped by the Camping World Bowl blowout, though.
Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell will be on the sideline for his fifth season, joined by OC Tom Manning (fourth year) and DC Jon Heacock (fifth year). The good news is that the Cyclones will have three of their first four games at Jack Trice Stadium, so the team should have ample time to get acclimated at home after a weird offseason.
Louisiana is 5-0 ATS in their last five games in September and 4-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games. The Cajuns are 1-4 ATS in their last five versus the Big 12 and 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
Meanwhile, the Cyclones are 9-4 in their last 13 games in September and 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games on grass. Iowa State is 0-4 ATS in their last four home games and 0-4-1 ATS in their last five games as a favorite.
Pick: I’m going with Louisiana here. The Cajuns are coming off their best year in the history of the school, and retain plenty of key names on both sides. There may even be a good opportunity to snag a conference title, as Appalachian State is going through another coaching change. Iowa State should be pretty decent this year again, but the Cajuns look like they’re primed for good things in 2020.
