The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and the Kansas Jayhawks meet Saturday in college football action from KU Memorial Stadium.
Coastal Carolina is coming off a 5-7 season overall in 2019, finishing 2-6 in the Sun Belt. That left the Chanticleers in last place in the East Division and out of bowl game contention. As for the Jayhawks, they did even worse last year at 3-9 overall. Kansas went a paltry 1-8 in the Big 12, leaving the team in last place in the conference. Coastal Carolina looked like they were catching steam early last season, getting off to a 3-1 start which included a tense 12-7 win over Kansas in week two. The Chanticleers would go on to lose six of their next seven games however, and a 24-21 win over Texas State in the last week was one of the few bright spots.
This year Coastal Carolina will get the second season of head coach Jamey Chadwell and his crew, including Newland Isaac and Willy Korn on offense and Chad Staggs as defensive coordinator. That crew will be focused on tightening up the defense this season, as the Chanticleers gave up 28 points or more in each of their 2019 losses.
Over on the Kansas side, there weren’t a whole lot of things the team did well last year, and even when the Jayhawks found the end zone they were hemorrhaging points on the other side. Kansas lost eight of their final nine games in 2019, and gave up 29 or more points in each.
Kansas is going to have a tough road in 2020, as most of their relatively soft non-conference schedule was wiped out due to pandemic rescheduling. After this opener, the Jayhawks have tough matchups versus Baylor and Oklahoma State looming.
The Chanticleers are 6-1 ATS in their last seven non-conference games and 5-1 ATS in their last six road games. Coastal Carolina is 4-1 ATS in their last five games as an underdog and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games on turf.
Meanwhile, the Jayhawks are 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games and 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 non-conference games. Kansas is 5-17 ATS in their last 22 games as a favorite and 1-4 ATS in their last five versus the Sun Belt.
Pick: I’m going Kansas, but this one will likely be tight. The Jayhawks offense should be a little more well-rounded this year, and we should see a much higher total than the 12-7 battle we had last year. It’s not going to be pretty on either side; we’re probably in for sloppy football. Still, the Jayhawks should be talented enough to eke out a cover here. Regardless, it should be a fairly entertaining matchup that will give us a lot of insight into what each team will look like in 2020.
