Central Arkansas had a solid but ultimately disappointing campaign in 2019, going 9-4 overall and 7-2 in Southland Conference play. The Bears made co-champions of the conference but stumbled in the FCS Playoffs Second Round game, losing 24-14 to Illinois State.
After a 24-17 win over Austin Peay, Central Arkansas had trouble with UAB in their second game. The Bears allowed points in every quarter, and ultimately fell by 10 to drop their record to 1-1. Quarterback Breylin Smith threw for 193 yards, three touchdowns and an interception there, and Kierre Crossley led the rush with 10 totes for 59 yards. Tops in receiving was Lujuan Winningham with six catches for 53 yards and two scores.
Over on the Arkansas State side, they had an early lead on Memphis in their first game, but were outscored 30-10 in the final three quarters. Quarterback Logan Bonner posted 133 yards passing there with a TD and two picks. Jamal Jones carried 15 times for 64 yards, and Dahu Green had 99 yards on five catches.
In the victory over Kansas State, it took the Red Wolves a while to really get going but they managed to power out a 35-31 win. Bonner posted 204 yards with two scores and a pick in the win, and Jones had 95 yards on 16 carries. Jonathan Adams was the leading receiver there with eight catches for 98 yards and three touchdowns.

Pick: I like Arkansas State in this one. The Red Wolves have displayed some pretty nice offensive capabilities thus far, but need to get a better handle on defense as they’ve allowed 68 points across two games. Central Arkansas looked pretty decent versus a sketchy Austin Peay team but struggled some in their second game. That said, I expect this to be a pretty high-scoring affair, initially competitive and a fun one to watch.
