The UCF Knights and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets meet Saturday in college football action from Bobby Dodd Stadium.
This will be UCF’s first outing of the 2020 season. Last year, the Knights went 10-3 overall and 6-2 in the American Athletic Conference. That mark was good for an invite to the Gasparilla Bowl, where UCF took out Marshall 48-25. As for Georgia Tech, their season is already underway following a tight victory over Florida State 16-13 this past weekend. UCF had an overall good season in 2019, but a third consecutive conference championship eluded the team. The Knights started out well with three straight wins and were ranked as high as No. 15 nationally, but losses at Pittsburgh and at Cincinnati pretty much put a lid on the team’s aspirations. UCF was very competitive in their three losses, falling by a combined score of just seven points in that trio.
Over on the Georgia Tech side, they went a paltry 3-9 last season overall and 2-6 in a tough ACC. The Yellow Jackets stumbled out of the gate with a loss to a great Clemson team, and would go 1-5 over their first half-dozen games. Georgia Tech’s victories were all tight, as the team won those three games by a combined 13 points.
The good news is that Georgia Tech’s season got off to a nice start with the 16-13 win over Florida State. Jeff Sims threw for 277 yards in that one with a touchdown and two interceptions while also leading the team in rushing with 64 yards on 13 carries. Malachi Charter was the top Yellow Jackets receiver with six grabs for 66 yards.
The Knights are 4-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games and 17-7 against the spread in their last 24 games on grass. UCF is 9-4 against the spread versus a team with a winning record and 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games overall.
Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games as an underdog and 4-12 ATS in their last 16 games overall. Georgia Tech is 1-8 ATS in their last nine home games and 0-4 ATS in the last four games after an ATS win.
Pick: I think Georgia Tech can hang around in this one. The Yellow Jackets don’t seem like they’ll be as reliant on the rush this season, and a more well-balanced offensive attack will only help the team. Georgia Tech has upgraded their offensive line and has some promising pieces in the receiver slots. If the Jackets can keep the turnovers down I can see a cover here, and I think they'll be a much-improved team this season as well.
