The Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the NC State Wolfpack meet Saturday in college football action from Carter-Finley Stadium in an ACC battle.
Wake Forest has one game in the books for the 2020 season so far. It didn’t work out so well for the Demon Deacons however, as they fell 37-13 to Clemson. As for NC State, this will be their first action of the year. The Wolfpack posted a 4-8 record in 2019, going 1-7 in a tough ACC. The Demon Deacons posted a pretty decent record last year, going 8-5 overall and 4-4 in ACC play. That left Wake Forest in third place in the Atlantic Division and earned the team a spot in the Pinstripe Bowl. The Deacons lost that game to Michigan State 27-21, however.
In the 37-13 loss to Clemson, Wake Forest was down 27-0 at halftime and 37-3 after the third quarter. There wasn’t much offense going on, but quarterback Sam Hartman posted 182 yards on 11-of-21 passing. Taylor Morin led the receivers with 93 yards and a score on nine catches and Christian Beal-Smith rushed 11 times for a tepid 29 yards.
Over on the NC State side, their forgettable 4-8 campaign in 2019 was highlighted by a pretty bad offense, finishing 11th in the conference in total yardage and 12th in scoring. Turnovers were a big issue, and the Wolfpack didn’t score more than 26 points in any of their last eight games. (Seven of those were losses.)
The Wolfpack brings back a young group of running backs in 2020, and also has a nice veteran receiving corps. There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about NC State this year, but it goes without saying that it’ll be tough to gain ground in a competitive ACC.
The Demon Deacons are 4-1-1 ATS in the last six games in September and 11-4 ATS in their last 15 as a road underdog. Wake Forest is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 after an ATS win and 1-4 ATS in the last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Wolfpack are 5-16 ATS in their last 21 games overall and 1-5 ATS in the last six home games. NC State is 0-6 ATS in their last six conference games and 0-4 ATS in their last four games in September.
Pick: I’m going to stick with Wake Forest. Sure, their first game was a pretty ugly loss that wasn’t even as close as the lopsided score indicated. That said, Clemson does that to a lot of teams. Wake Forest has also won the last three meetings between these teams and has a pretty good arm in Hartman. If he can get settled here and find some holes in the defense, Wake Forest could jump out to a big lead in a hurry.
