The Charlotte 49ers and the North Carolina Tar Heels meet in college football action from Kenan Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
The Charlotte 49ers come into this one looking to rebound after opening their season with a 35-20 loss to Appalachian State in their last outing. Chris Reynolds threw for 140 yards and a pair of interceptions on 11 of 30 passing while Tre Harbison III had 87 rushing yards and a touchdown. Taylor Thompson led the 49ers receivers with 62 receiving yards while Cameron Dollar had 25 receiving yards and Victor Tucker had a team-high 3 grabs for 23 yards. Defensively, Ben DeLuca had a team-high 16 total tackles with 8 solo tackles while Tyler Murray had 14 total tackles and a pair of fumble recoveries. Luke Martin had 11 total tackles and Nafees Lynn had 10 total tackles with a fumble recovery as well. Aaron McAllister had a 97-yard kick return for a touchdown as well for the 49ers in the losing effort.
The North Carolina Tar Heels will look to keep the train rolling after starting the year with a 31-6 win over Syracuse in their last outing. Sam Howell threw for 295 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions while Michael Carter led UNC with 78 rushing yards and Javonte Williams had 57 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. Dyami Brown led the Tar Heels with 6 grabs for 94 yards while Michael Carter had 6 catches of his own for 60 yards and Beau Corrales had 5 catches for 47 yards. Garrett Walston had 11 receiving yards and a touchdown as well. Defensively, Chazz Surratt had 9 total tackles with 4 solo tackles with a pair of sacks and 2.5 tackles for a loss. Jeremiah Gemmel had 5 total tackles with 4 solo tackles while also logging a sack and 2 tackles for a loss. Tomari Fox also had 2 sacks and 2 TFLs while Tomon fox had a sack and 2 TFLs himself.
Charlotte is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 2-4 ATS in their last 6 road games while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall. North Carolina is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games and 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 home games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 home games.
I get that the Tar Heels are the better team and the score line from that game against Syracuse would dictate how good UNC is on the surface, but the last three touchdowns in the 4th were mostly a product of Syracuse falling apart as the Tar Heels for whatever reason couldn’t get points on the board in the first three quarters. Charlotte is a rightful underdog once again, but they gave Appalachian State a fight in the opener and slid in the backdoor to cover and when picking games against the spread, it could be by 1 point or 100, the cover is all that matters. I think we could be in for another backdoor cover situation with the 49ers here as this is just a ton of points to give a 49ers team that can hold their own. Give me Charlotte and the boatload of points in this one.
