The Syracuse Orange and the Pittsburgh Panthers meet Saturday in college football action from Heinz Field.

Syracuse’s 2020 season didn’t start out very well, as they were beaten 31-6 by North Carolina in the first game this past weekend. As for Pittsburgh, they fared much better in their first game, destroying Austin Peay 55-0 in a huge shutout victory. Syracuse is coming off a down year in 2019, going 5-7 overall and 2-6 in a tough ACC. That left the Orange in sixth place in the Atlantic Division and out of bowl contention after a pretty good 10-3 record in 2018.

The Orange were pummeled by North Carolina in their 2020 opener despite being down just 10-6 heading into the fourth quarter. Syracuse quarterback Tommy Devito tossed for 112 yards on a 13-of-31 line, and also led the rush with 16 carries for 30 yards. Taj Harris was the top receiver for the Orange with five catches for 64 yards.

Over on the Pittsburgh side, they’re coming off a fairly successful season in 2019. The Panthers went 8-5 overall and 4-4 in ACC play, finishing in fourth place in the Coastal Division. That mark was good enough for an invite to the Quick Lane Bowl, where Pittsburgh took out Eastern Michigan 34-30.

In their first game of the 2020 season, the Panthers got off to a hot start and never looked back, scoring a whopping 42 points in the first half alone versus Austin Peay. Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett had a nice day with 277 yards and a touchdown, while Vincent Davis led the rush on 11 carries, 43 yards and two touchdowns. The Panthers’ top receiver was DJ Turner with 76 yards and a TD off two grabs.

The Orange are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games following a straight-up loss and 2-5 ATS in their last seven versus a team with a winning record. Syracuse is 2-7 ATS in their last nine overall and 2-7 ATS in their last nine conference games.

Meanwhile, the Panthers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games in September and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 following an ATS win. Pittsburgh is 8-19 ATS in their last 27 games as a home favorite and 4-9 ATS in their last 13 home games versus a team with a losing road record.

Pick: I’m sticking with Pittsburgh here. Granted, Austin Peay isn’t exactly a strong team this season, but the Panthers put on a clinic in their first game. Ten different receivers caught a pass, and Pitt got some solid rushing production from several guys as well. Syracuse is a better team than they looked like in Week 1 (UNC should be pretty darn good this year), but I still think they’re overmatched in this one.
