The UAB Blazers and South Alabama Jaguars meet today (Thursday) in week 4 college football action at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Thursday Night college football action.
The UAB Blazers look for a strong rod win to get a game above a .500 record. The UAB Blazers have lost four of their last five road games. Tyler Johnston III is completing 66.7 percent of his passes for 293 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Johnston and Bryson Lucero have combined for four touchdown passes. Myron Mitchell and Austin Watkins Jr. have combined for 268 receiving yards and two touchdowns while Hayden Pittman has four receptions. The UAB Blazers ground game is averaging 156.5 yards per contest, and Spencer Brown leads the way with 201 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, UAB is allowing 33 points and 394 yards per game. Kristopher Moll leads the UAB Blazers with 19 tackles, Nikia Eason Jr. has two sacks and Keondre Swoopes has one interception.
The South Alabama Jaguars look for their first home win to get a game above a .500 record. The South Alabama Jaguars have lost five of their last six home games. Desmond Trotter is completing 57.1 percent of his passes for 373 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Trotter and Chance Lovertich have combined for five touchdown passes this season. Jalen Tolbert and Kawaan Baker have combined for 479 receiving yards and four touchdowns while Jalen Wayne has nine receptions. The South Alabama Jaguars ground game is averaging 114 yards per contest, and Carlos Davis leads the way with 167 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, South Alabama is allowing 24 points and 401.5 yards per game. Nick Mobley leads the South Alabama Jaguars with 23 tackles, Gi'Narious Johnson has one sack and Tré Young has two pass deflections.
The Blazers are 5-2 against the spread in their last 7 games as a favorite, 1-4 against the spread in their last 5 road games and 5-1 against the spread in their last 6 vs. S-Belt. The Jaguars are 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 home games, 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 Thursday games and 6-1 against the spread in their last 7 games overall. The under is 5-1-1 in Blazers last 7 road games. The under is 8-3-1 in Jaguars last 12 games overall.
The UAB Blazers are probably the better team here, and they hung around with an above-average Miami team on the road the last time we saw them. However, UAB isn't to the point where I'm running to the window to lay chalk with on the road. The South Alabama Jaguars aren't exactly pushovers, and they just had a chance to beat Tulane outright despite being 11-point underdogs. And while the atmosphere isn't the same as it usually is, Thursday night is usually where the underdogs come alive and we see crazy things happen in college football. To me, the jury is still out on the UAB Blazers.
Give me South Alabama and the free touchdown.
