The Iowa State Cyclones and the TCU Horned Frogs meet Saturday in college football action from Amon G. Carter Stadium.
Iowa State enters this matchup at 0-1 on the 2020 season. The Cyclones fell in their first outing 31-14 versus Louisiana back on September 12. As for TCU, this will be the team’s first action of the year. The Horned Frogs are coming off a 5-7 record last year, going 3-6 in Big 12 Conference play. Iowa State posted a 7-6 record overall in 2019, going 5-4 in the Big 12 Conference. The Cyclones earned an invite to the Camping World Bowl against a tough Notre Dame team. Iowa State fell 33-9 in that game to end the season on a sour note.
Moving on to 2020, Iowa State’s first game didn’t go so well either. The Cyclones had a 14-10 lead at halftime but were blanked 21-0 in the second half. Iowa State QB Brock Purdy posted 145 yards and an interception, and Breece Hall led the running game on 103 yards and a TD. Xavier Hutchinson had four catches for 43 yards to lead the receivers there.
Over on the TCU side, they’re looking to regain relevance in the Big 12 after a lost season in 2019. The Frogs were just 3-6 in conference play, which left them in a tie for seventh place and out of a bowl game. TCU notched a couple of nice wins over Texas and Texas Tech later on in the season, but lost four of their final five games in a tough slate. Horned Frogs head coach Gary Patterson will try to right the ship in his 20th season at the helm.
The Cyclones are 5-1 ATS in their last six games following a bye week and 15-6 ATS in their last 21 games after a straight-up loss. Iowa State is 0-5 ATS in their last five games overall and 0-5-1 ATS in their last six games as a favorite.
Meanwhile, the Frogs are 10-24 ATS in their last 34 games on grass and 7-22 ATS in their last 29 home games. TCU is 1-4 ATS in their last five conference games and 1-5 ATS in their last six games following a bye week.
Pick: I’m going to stick with Iowa State in this one. Granted, the Cyclones’ opening week performance left much to be desired on both sides of the ball, but Louisiana is a good team this season. Iowa State was right there until the fourth quarter, and the scoreboard would have looked much different if not for a couple of late mistakes. As for TCU, they should be improved this season but on paper Iowa State is probably the play here—at least until we see what the Frogs look like on the field in 2020.
