The South Florida Bulls and the Florida Atlantic Owls meet Saturday in college football action from FAU Stadium. This Game is Postponed
South Florida enters this game at 1-1 on the young season. The Bulls managed a 27-6 win over the Citadel in the opener, but then were steamrolled by Notre Dame last weekend in a 52-0 shutout. As for Florida Atlantic, this will be their first action of the 2020 season. The Owls went 11-3 overall, winning the division, the conference and the Boca Raton Bowl. South Florida put up a nice effort in the opener versus the Citadel. The Bulls were up 20-6 at the break and never looked back, shutting out the Bulldogs in the second half. Kelley Joiner led the rushing attack for USF with 87 yards and a TD, and Johnny Ford added 71 yards on nine carries.
The Notre Dame game didn’t go as well for the Bulls, obviously. South Florida couldn’t get anything going, and were down 35-0 at halftime. Ford was one of the few offensive standouts for USF in that game, tallying six carries for 70 yards. Quarterback Jordan McCloud was 8-of-14 for just 64 yards.
Over on the Florida Atlantic side, they’re riding into 2020 on a high after a great season last year. The Owls were 11-3 overall and 7-1 in Conference USA play, finishing atop the division. FAU took out UAB 49-6 in the Conference USA Championship Game, then dispatched SMU 52-28 in the Boca Raton Bowl. There really weren’t a whole lot of missteps for Florida Atlantic outside of losses to good Ohio State and UCF teams, as well as an October 18 loss to Marshall 36-31.
The Owls get a new head coach in Willie Taggart this season, and he’ll try to duplicate last year’s success. First-year defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt and first-year co-offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer join the team this season as well.
The Bulls are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following an ATS loss and 4-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games. USF is 5-2 ATS in their last seven games following a straight-up loss and 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games.
Meanwhile, the Owls are 5-0 ATS versus a team with a winning record and 4-0 ATS in their last four home games. Florida Atlantic is 4-1 ATS in their last five games on grass and 4-1 ATS in their last five as a home favorite.
Pick: I’m going to go with Florida Atlantic here. It will be interesting to see what the Owls look like under new leadership, and the team has already had some major hurdles to cross this season due to injuries and virus issues. It’s a major defensive rebuild for the Owls in 2020, but I think they’ve still got enough talent to contain a one-dimensional South Florida for a cover.
