The UTEP Miners and the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks meet in college football action from JPS Field at James Malone Stadium on Saturday.
The UTEP Miners will look to build on their 2-1 start to the year after a 17-13 win over Abilene Christian last time out. So far this year, Gavin Hardison has thrown for 548 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions on 55% passing while Deion Hankins leads the Miners offense in rushing with 147 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. Josh Fields has 99 rushing yards with a touchdown and Ronald Awatt has a rushing TD as well. Jacob Cowing leads UTEP in receiving with 19 grabs for 275 yards while Justin Garrett has 167 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Stephen Forrester has 17 total tackles to lead UTEP, posting 10 solo tackles while Justin Prince has 16 tackles with 8 solo and Dennis Barnes and Dy’Vonne Inyang each have 14 tackles with Inyang posting 10 solo tackles as well this season.
The Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks will try to find their first win of the year after falling to 0-2 with a 38-17 loss to Texas State in their last game. Colby Suits has thrown for 525 yards, 3 touchdowns and an interception on 68.1% passing while Josh Johnson has rushed for 89 yards to lead ULM in that category. Jahquan Bloomfield leads ULM in receiving with 108 receiving yards while Perry Carter Jr. has 8 grabs for 98 yards and Josh Pederson has a team-high 9 catches for 94 yards this season. Defensively, Traveion Webster leads ULM with 19 total tackles while Austin Hawley has a team-high 12 solo tackles as part of his 17 total tackles this season.
UTEP is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record and 7-19 ATS in their last 26 non-conference games while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games as an underdog. Louisiana-Monroe is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 8-20 ATS in their last 28 games overall while the over is 9-0 in their last 9 home games against a team with a winning road record.
I think this is a play that’s more based on potential than anything else as I’m leaning towards laying the points with ULM here. Now laying points with an 0-2 team against a team that’s 2-1 usually wouldn’t make sense, but UTEP’s barely squeaked by a pair of FCS programs in Stephen F. Austin and Abilene Christian while getting smacked by Texas 59-3 two games ago. ULM was shoved around by Army and Texas State, but the Warhawks are simply the better team offensively and should’nt have a ton of issues putting UTEP away. The Miners are just a bad football team and don’t let two window dressing/filler wins over subdivision opposition fool you. I’ll lay the points in what should be a double-digit ULM win here.
