The Jacksonville State Gamecocks and the Florida State Seminoles meet Saturday in college football action from Doak Campbell Stadium.
This will be Jacksonville State’s first action of the 2020 college football season. The Gamecocks have a four-game schedule mapped out and hopefully more on the way soon. As for Florida State, they opened up with a loss to Georgia Tech, then fell in a blowout to Miami this past weekend. The Gamecocks are coming off a .500 season in 2019 at 6-6 overall and 3-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference. That left Jacksonville State in a tie for fifth place in the standings and out of postseason consideration. It was a letdown from 2018, when the Gamecocks went 9-4 and 7-1 in OVC play.
Jacksonville State has a four-game slate mapped out for October. After this Florida State outing, it’s back home for Mercer, then out again for North Alabama. The Gamecocks also have a game scheduled at FIU on October 23.
Over on the Florida State side, they’ve been fortunate enough to get two games in, but unfortunate enough to lose both. The Georgia Tech opener was a tight, 16-13 affair. Seminoles QB James Blackman posted 198 yards with one TD and one INT in that one, and La’Damian Webb led a paltry rush with 39 yards on 13 carries.
The Seminoles’ second game went even worse, and was against a tougher opponent in Miami. Florida State lost 52-10, with Blackman going 120 yards with one TD and one pick. Lawrance Toafili led the rushers with eight carries for 64 yards, and Camm McDonald was the lead receiver with six grabs for 58 yards and a score.

Pick: I’m going to take a chance on Florida State here, but I’m likely staying away from this game. It's just a really thick line. The Seminoles are better on paper than they’ve been so far in a bad start, but it’s worth noting that FSU has faced an improved Georgia Tech team and a really good Miami team in their first two outings. It’ll be difficult to get a gauge on Jacksonville State until we see them on the field, but if Florida State can find an early rhythm they should be able to cover.
