The Charlotte 49ers and the Florida Atlantic Owls meet Saturday in college football action from FAU Stadium.
Charlotte enters this one at 0-1 on the young season. The 49ers took a 35-20 loss versus Appalachian State on September 12, then had to postpone a matchup versus Georgia State this past weekend. As for the Owls, this is their first action of the 2020 season. FAU had a postponement last weekend as well, theirs versus USF. Charlotte’s first game of the 2020 season didn’t go so well. The 49ers were within one point at 21-20 heading into the fourth quarter, but were outscored 14-0 by Appalachian State the rest of the way to a 35-20 loss.
In the game one defeat, Charlotte quarterback Chris Reynolds went 11-for-30 with 140 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions, while Taylor Thompson led the receivers with 62 yards on two catches. Tre Harbison was the leading rusher in that one with 17 carries for 87 yards and a TD.
Over on the Florida Atlantic side, it’s been hard to get the 2020 season going after the postponements. The Owls originally had games scheduled versus Georgia Southern and South Florida over the last two weekends, so hopefully we’ll be able to finally see some on-field action here.
The Owls are coming off a really nice season in 2019, going 11-3 overall and 7-1 in Conference USA play. Florida Atlantic won the Conference USA Championship game 49-6 over UAB and earned a trip to the Boca Raton Bowl, where the Owls defeated SMU 52-28.
Charlotte is 4-1 ATS in their last five games as an underdog and 4-1 ATS in their last five conference games. The 49ers are 5-2 ATS in their last seven overall and 9-3 ATS in the last 12 October games.
Meanwhile, the Owls are 4-0 ATS in their last four at home and 6-1 ATS in their last seven games overall. Florida Atlantic is 7-15-1 ATS versus a team with a losing record and 4-1 ATS in their last five as a home favorite.
Pick: I’m going Florida Atlantic here, and let’s all cross our fingers that they actually get to take the field this weekend. The Owls will have some new faces in key positions—namely redshirt junior Nick Tronti at quarterback—but also have a strong stable of guys like Malcolm Davidson who will carry some heavy offensive weight. I expect things to be close initially as FAU feels it out, but I still like the Owls on a cover.
