The Central Arkansas Bears and the Arkansas State Red Wolves meet Saturday in college football action from Centennial Bank Stadium.
Central Arkansas enters this one at 2-2 on the year. The Bears have recorded wins over Austin Pean and Missouri State thus far, but have fallen to UAB and North Dakota State otherwise. As for the Red Wolves, they’re 1-2 this season. Arkansas State got a win over Kansas State in their second game, but lost to Memphis and Coastal Carolina in the other two. The Bears have gotten off to a pretty good offensive start overall, but they’ve let the defense get away from them in a couple of games. Central Arkansas has put up at least 24 points in each game; that’s the good news. The bad news is that the Bears gave up 45 to UAB and 39 to North Dakota State, losing by double-digits in both outings.
In the North Dakota State loss, Central Arkansas quarterback Breylin Smith posted 226 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. Smith also led the rush with 10 carries for 34 yards, and Tyler Hudson was the top receiver with 58 yards and a TD. Lujuan Winningham added 55 yards and two touchdowns from four grabs there as well.
As for the Red Wolves, they’ve run into similar issues this season: solid offense; sketchy defense. Arkansas State has scored at least 23 in all three games, but also given up at least 31 in all three games as well.
In the 52-23 loss to Coastal Carolina, Arkansas State QB Logan Bonner posted 165 yards with two touchdowns on 16-of-21 passing. Lincoln Pare led the way in an abandoned running game with six carries for 18 yards, and Brandon Bowling led the receivers on seven catches for 115 yards and two TDs.

Pick: I’m going Central Arkansas here. Arkansas State has put up some pretty decent offensive outings this season, but the points allowed total through three games (124) compared to the points scored total (82) is telling. The Bears haven’t been dominant by any means, but Central Arkansas has displayed a pretty steady clip so far and haven’t really been blown out. I think the Bears will have a nice game here and cover. Should be a pretty fun matchup though.
