The FAU Owls and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles meet in C-USA college football action from M.M. Roberts Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The FAU Owls will look to build on a 21-17 win over Charlotte to start their year. Nick Tronti threw for 98 yards on 11 of 22 passing with a pair of touchdowns while also rushing for a team-high 94 yards and a score. James Charles had 45 rushing yards and Larry McCammon III had 43 rushing yards while Logan Peterson and T.J. Chase each had 25 yards and a receiving touchdown. Defensively, Chase Lasater had a team-high 11 total tackles while Leighton McCarthy and Caliph Brice each had 10 total tackles with McCarthy logging 3 sacks. Jaylen Joyner and Chris Jones each had 1.5 sacks as well for FAU in the winning effort.
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will look to build on their first win of the season coming in the form of a 41-31 win over North Texas last time out. Jack Abraham has thrown for 1,112 yards, 7 touchdowns and 3 interceptions on 64.4% passing while Frank Gore Jr. leads USM in rushing with 208 rushing yards and a touchdown and Kevin Perkins has two rushing TDs for USM this season. Jason Brownlee leads USM’s receiving group with 17 grabs for 301 yards and 3 touchdowns while Tim Jones has 14 catches for 299 yards and Demarcus Jones has a team-high 19 catches for 183 yards this season. Defensively, Hayes Maples leads the Golden Eagles with 38 total tackles while Malik Shorts is right behind with 37 total tackles and a team-high 16 solo tackles this season. Ky’el Hemby has 29 total tackles while Dominic Quewon has a pair of sacks for USM on the year.
Trends will be updated once they’ve been released.
I may have been wrong about FAU against Charlotte last week, but while there is potential for the offense to be really good, it feels like it’s still going to take a week or two to fully gel at game speed. That won’t help against a Southern Miss team that’s been pretty good offensively despite a 1-3 record as scoring hasn’t been the issue, it’s been cutting down on mistakes and being better on the defensive end. I think that we could see Southern Miss throw the ball around the field with some confidence now that they have a win under their belts and this is a dangerous team to be giving points to at home. I’ll take a shot with USM and the points in a game the Golden Eagles could win outright.
