The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders and the FIU Panthers meet Saturday in college football action from FIU Stadium.
Middle Tennessee enters this one at 0-4 so far. The Raiders have fallen to Army 42-0, Troy 47-14, UTSA 37-35 and Western Kentucky 20-17 in succession over their first quartet of outings. As for the Panthers, they’ve only got one game under their belts this season. That one ended up being a 36-34 loss to Liberty to drop FIU to 0-1. Middle Tennessee stumbled out of the gate in their first two games, but they’ve gotten better in their most recent pair. The Raiders were outscored 89-14 versus Army and Troy combined. Against UTSA and Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee was outscored by a margin of 57-52.
In the three-point loss to Western Kentucky, Blue Raiders QB Asher O’Hara posted 217 yards with one touchdown. Jarrin Pierce was the lead Middle Tennessee receiver with nine catches for 65 yards, and O’Hara led the rush with 25 carries for 98 yards and another score.
Over on the Panthers’ side, their first game was a heartbreaker that came down to a 9-6 fourth quarter and a two-point loss. FIU allowed 527 total yards and 31 first downs in that game, and allowed Liberty to go 11-of-19 on third and fourth downs. The Panthers were also sloppy in the defeat with 15 penalties for 127 total yards.
FIU quarterback Stone Norton posted 120 yards and a TD in the opener loss, while Bryce Singleton caught two balls for 50 yards and a touchdown. D’Vonte Price did most of the offensive work himself, with 13 carries for 148 yards and two touchdowns.
The Blue Raiders are 4-0 ATS in their last five conference games and 5-1 ATS in their last six games in October. Middle Tennessee is 8-2 ATS versus a team with a losing record and 6-2 ATS in their last eight after a straight-up loss.
Meanwhile, the Panthers are 6-0 ATS in their last six after a bye week and 5-2 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win. FIU is 2-5 versus a team with a losing record and 1-4 ATS in their last five conference games.
Pick: I’m going with Middle Tennessee. Looking at the Raiders’ record it seems odd to pick them for anything, but the last two games have offered some hope for MTSU faithful with a couple of vastly improved performances. FIU played a chippy and defensively-lacking game in their opener, and they’ll need to get some things cleaned up quick. If Middle Tennessee can post a solid defensive effort in this one, I think the Raiders have a great shot at staying close.
