The East Carolina Pirates and the USF Bulls meet in AAC college football action from Raymond James Stadium on Saturday night.
The East Carolina Pirates will look to bounce back from their 0-2 start after a 49-29 loss to Georgia State last time out. Holton Ahlers has thrown for 451 yards, 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions on 54.4% passing while Keaton Mitchell has a team-high 66 rushing yards for the Pirates. Tyler Snead has a team-high 113 receiving yards and Blake Proehl has 102 receiving yards as the only other Pirate with 100+ receiving yards this season. Defensively, Jireh Wilson has a team-high 16 total tackles as does Xavier Smith but it’s Wilson sharing the team lead with 10 solo tackles with Ja’Quan McMillian. Immanuel Hickman and Warren Saba each have an interception for the Pirates this season as well.
The USF Bulls will look to rebound from back-to-back losses after a 28-7 loss to Cincinnati last time out. Jordan McCloud has thrown for 269 yards, a touchdown and 2 interceptions on 60.8% passing while Johnny Ford has rushed for 153 yards and Kelley Joiner isn’t far behind with 129 rushing yards this season. DeVontres Dukes leads USF in receiving with 8 grabs for 100 yards and a touchdown as well this season. Defensively, Nick Roberts and Antonio Grier each have 23 total tackles with Grier logging a team-high 11 solo tackles and a pair of sacks. Vincent Davis has 21 total tackles while Mac Harris is one of four USF Bulls with an interception this season.
East Carolina is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games against a team with a losing record and 6-17 ATS in their last 23 road games while the over is 6-0 in their last 6 games as an underdog. South Florida is 4-9 ATS in their last 13 home games and 7-15 ATS in their last 22 conference games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games following a loss. East Carolina is 1-7 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
This is a hard one to call, as you have two teams that have had issues keeping points off of the board, but neither are ones you’d trust with your hard earned money either. With that being said, while ECU is a much easier test for USF than say Notre Dame or Cincinnati, the fact is that the Bulls are still having issues scoring and that’s not good even against an East Carolina team that hung 29 points on UCF and Georgia State. Between two teams struggling defensively, I want the one that can at least score once in a while and the fact that we’re getting points doesn’t hurt either. I’ll lean towards East Carolina and the points in this one.
