The Texas State Bobcats and the South Alabama Jaguars meet Saturday in college football action from Hancock Whitney Stadium.
Texas State enters this matchup at 1-4 so far. The Bobcats got a win over UL Monroe on September 19, but otherwise have fallen to SMU, UTSA, Boston College and Troy this season. As for the Jaguars, they’re sitting at 1-2 this year. South Alabama won versus Southern Mississippi in their opener but since have dropped games to Tulane and UAB. The Bobcats probably should have another win or two to their credit so far, but haven’t been able to power through those close games. The points allowed totals have been an issue for Texas State; the team has given up at least 31 in three of five games. That total also includes a 37-17 loss to Troy last weekend.
In the Trojans loss, Bobcats quarterback Brady McBride put up 93 yards and a touchdown on 15-of-28 passing. Javen Banks was the lead receiver with one catch for 17 yards, and Calvin Hill managed six carrels for 57 yards to top the rush.
Over on the Jaguars’ side, it’s been a while since we’ve seen them on the field. With the postponement of an October 3 game versus Troy, South Alabama’s last game was back on September 24 versus UAB. That one was a 42-10 loss and sent South Alabama to 1-2 on the season.
In the loss to UAB, Jaguars quarterback Chance Lovertich posted 168 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Jalen Tolbert was the leading receiver in the defeat with three catches for 59 yards and a score, while Carlos Davis was the top rusher on 17 carries for 105 yards.
The Bobcats are 4-1 ATS in their last five games as an underdog and 4-1 ATS in their last five road games. Texas State is 5-2 ATS in their last seven games overall and 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 conference games.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars are 5-1 ATS in their last six home games and 6-2 ATS in their last eight games overall. South Alabama is 6-2 ATS versus a team with a losing record and 5-12-1 ATS in their last 18 games as a home favorite.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Texas State here. Both these teams need a victory, and both have been quite underwhelming so far this season. The Bobcats have shown a pretty good ability to score, despite posting a relatively tepid 38 points combined over their last two games. If Texas State can get off to a nice start in this one—ideally holding a lead into halftime—I like the Bobcats’ chances at holding off the Jags and getting a win.
