The Cincinnati Bearcats and the SMU Mustangs meet Saturday in Week 8 AAC college football action from Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
Cincinnati is 3-0 on the 2020 season so far. The Bearcats have rattled of victories over Austin Peay, Army and South Florida so far. As for SMU, they’re sitting at 5-0 this year. The Mustangs have beaten Texas State, North Texas, Stephen F. Austin, Memphis and Tulane in succession. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
The Bearcats have gotten off to a nice start, and none of their games has been especially close. Cincinnati took out Austin Peay 55-20 to begin the year, then took care of a pretty good Army team 24-10. The Bearcats’ solid play continued with a 28-7 win over South Florida on October 3.
In the win over USF, Bearcats QB Desmond Ridder put up 143 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Jayshon Jackson was the leading receiver there on three catches for 47 yards, and Gerrid Doaks had 102 yards and a TD on 22 carries.
Over on the SMU side, they’ve had a few close escapes but there’s really not much to complain about. The Mustangs first three games were 31-24 over Texas State, 65-35 over North Texas and 50-7 versus SFA. The last couple of outings have been a bit hairy however, as SMU has escaped Memphis 30-27 and Tulane 37-34 (OT).
In the win over Tulane, Mustangs quarterback Shane Beuchele posted 384 yards with two touchdowns, and Ulysses Bentley had 94 yards and a TD. Rashee Rice (seven catches; 139 yards; TD) and Danny Gray (five catches; 133 yards; TD) held it down in the receiving game for SMU.
The Bearcats are 5-1 ATS versus a team with a winning record and the under is 6-0 in their last six after a straight-up win. The under is 6-0 in Cincinnati’s last six conference games and the under is 42-20-1 in their last 63 overall.
Meanwhile, the Mustangs are 4-1 ATS in their last five games as a home favorite and 4-1 in their last five home games. SMU is 2-5 ATS in their last seven conference games and the under is 5-2 in their last seven on turf.
PICK: I’m going Cincinnati. SMU has been impressive over their first five games, but they’ve been playing with fire on a few close calls lately. The Mustangs have allowed 24 or more points in four of their five games, and three of their wins have been decided by seven points or fewer. The Bearcats should have plenty of offensive firepower to keep pace here; I like this to be a high-flying, high-scoring game with Cincinnati pushing through for a cover.
