The UTEP Miners and the Charlotte 49ers meet in C-USA college football action from Jerry Richardson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The UTEP Miners will look to bounce back from a 21-17 loss to Louisiana Tech in their last game and then having their last game against Southern Miss postponed. Gavin Hardison has thrown for 1,056 yards, 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions on 52.4% passing while Deion Hankins leads the Miners in rushing with 300 rushing yards and 5 TDs. Joshua Fields has 185 rushing yards while Jacob Cowing has 29 grabs for 440 receiving yards. Justin Garrett is 2nd in receiving for UTEP with 338 receiving yards on 22 catches while Devaughn Cooper has 8 catches for 124 yards. Defensively, Stephen Forester has a team-high 35 total tackles while Praise Amaewhule has a team-high 6 sacks. Duron Lowe has a pair of interceptions as well for UTEP this season.
The Charlotte 49ers will try to build off of their first win of the season coming in the form of a 49-21 win over North Texas, but had their last game against FIU postponed due to COVID cases on FIU. Chris Reynolds has thrown for 744 yards, 3 touchdowns and a pair of interceptions on 59.5% passing while Tre Harbison III has rushed for 187 yards and 3 touchdowns and Aaron McAllister has 171 rushing yards this season. Victor Tucker has 13 catches for 177 yards while Micaleous Elder, Cameron Dollar and Tyler Ringwood each have 100+ receiving yards. Defensively, Tyler Murray and Ben DeLuca each have a team-high 13 solo tackles with Murray owning a team-high 29 total tackles.
UTEP is 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games against a team with a losing record and 6-14 ATS in their last 20 games overall while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games following a loss. Charlotte is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 conference games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games following a win.
I don’t think that the postponement could’ve come at a worse time for both teams. Sure, UTEP was coming off of a loss, but they had a lot of positives that could’ve come from the Louisiana Tech game. The worse case could be for Charlotte, who out of nowhere woke up for 49 points against North Texas, but I’m thinking that may be more about the Mean Green’s defense than anything else. I’m leaning towards UTEP and the points, but the stronger play for this game is the under as this one just reeks of a low-scoring game.
