The Maryland Terrapins and Northwestern Wildcats meet Saturday in week 8 Big Ten college football action at Ryan Field.
The Maryland Terrapins ended last season on a seven-game losing streak and finished the year with just three victories. The Maryland Terrapins have lost four straight road games. Taulia Tagovailoa gets the nod for the Terps at quarterback, the brother of Tua, the star at Alabama who is now with the Miami Dolphins. Maryland returns a wide receiver trio of Dontay Demus Jr., Brian Cobbs and Chigoziem Okonkwo that produced over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Tayon Fleet-Davis should see more carries at running back after averaging 4.2 yards on 63 carries. Defensively, Ayinde Eley finished second on Maryland with 79 tackles, Tahj Capehart had one sack and Nick Cross had two interceptions. Maryland had playmakers on offense this season and it’s going to be interesting if Tagovailoa can have the same impact at quarterback like his brother. If so, Maryland is going to be a thorn in the side of other Big Ten programs.
The Northwestern Wildcats ended their season losing eight of their last 10 games and also won just three games overall. The Northwestern Wildcats have lost five of their last six home games. Peyton Ramsey is likely going to be the starting quarterback this season for Northwestern. Northwestern returns a wide receiver trio of Riley Lees, Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman and JJ Jefferson that combined for over 700 yards and four touchdowns last year. Running back Drake Anderson returns after leading Northwestern with 634 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Paddy Fisher returns after leading Northwestern with 89 tackles, Eku Leota had 2.5 sacks and Blake Gallagher had three interceptions. Northwestern has playmakers on offense and returns a lot of leaders on defense. This should be a bounce back season for the Northwestern Wildcats.
The Terrapins are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 conference games, 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Wildcats are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 conference games, 1-8-2 ATS in their last 11 home games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The under is 44-17-1 in Wildcats last 62 home games.
Northwestern is a team we've backed a lot over the years, as they're often the team that's disrespected by oddsmakers and finds a way to cover numbers due to good coaching. I'm not sure I like Northwestern in the big favorite role the way I do when they're underdogs. The Northwestern Wildcats have improved talent on both sides of the ball and possibly the best quarterback they've had in the last 10 years or so. However, Maryland has playmakers on offense and a quarterback in Tagovailoa who has the potential to be special. We're also not used to seeing Northwestern blow teams out, as most of their games are sloppy and decided in the fourth quarter.
Give me the Terps and the points.
