The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles and Liberty Flames meet Saturday in early week 8 college football action at Williams Stadium.
The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles will play their first game in three weeks and hope to rebound from a 1-3 start to the CFB season. The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles have split their last eight road games. Jack Abraham is completing 64.4 percent of his passes for 1,112 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. Abraham seven touchdown passes in his last three games. Jason Brownlee and Tim Jones have combined for 600 receiving yards and five touchdowns while Demarcus Jones has 19 receptions. The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles ground game is averaging 124 yards per contest, and Frank Gore Jr. leads the way with 208 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Southern Mississippi is allowing 40 points and 486.5 yards per game. Hayes Maples leads the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles with 38 tackles, Dominic Quewon has two sacks and Eric Scott Jr. has one interception.
The Liberty Flames look for their fourth home win of the season to improve to 6-0 on the year. The Liberty Flames have won eight straight home games. Malik Willis is completing 64 percent of his passes for 777 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Willis and Chris Ferguson have combined for six touchdown passes this season. The Golden Eagles are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Flames are 5-0 ATS vs. a team with a losing record and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The under is 8-2 in Golden Eagles last 10 games overall. The under is 5-2 in Flames last 7 home games.
Southern Mississippi had its last two games postponed due to COVID-19 issues and it's hard for a team to find a rhythm when they haven't played in a couple of weeks and have even had limited practices due to the circumstances. Southern Miss also didn't look good defensively through four games, so there were concerns with this club before the virus spread. The Liberty Flames are downright rolling on both sides of the ball and just beat up on Syracuse on the road, which is an impressive win for this club. I'm not looking to step in front of Liberty right now, especially when playing a team that's been out of action for a couple weeks.
I'll lay the points.
