The Colorado State Rams and the Fresno State Bulldogs meet Thursday in college football action from Bulldog Stadium.
This will be Colorado State’s first game of the 2020 season. Last year, the Rams finished 4-8 overall with a 3-5 record in the Mountain West Conference. As for Fresno State, they’ve got one game in the books this season, a 34-19 loss versus Hawaii last weekend. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
The Rams had a forgettable year in 2019 with their 4-8 overall record and 3-5 mark in the conference. That finish put Colorado State one spot out of the basement in the Mountain Division, though it was a one-game improvement over a 3-9 run in 2018. In any case, it was the final year for head coach Mike Bobo, who left the position in December.
Taking over in 2020 for the Rams will be head coach Steve Addazio. He’ll be joined by Joey Lynch in his first season as offensive coordinator and Chuck Heater in his third year as defensive coordinator. This matchup will be Colorado State’s first game in (ideally) a seven-game season.
Over on the Fresno State side, they’re looking for some improvement over 2019 as well. The Bulldogs finished at 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the Mountain West Conference. Fresno State ended up in last place in the West Division, though the gap was a relatively slim three games in that tight group.
In Fresno State’s opening loss to Hawaii 34-19, quarterback Jake Haener posted 289 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions, while Ronnie Rivers had 18 carries for 79 yards and a score. Keric Wheatfall led the receivers there with three grabs for 73 yards.
The Rams are 5-0 ATS in their last five games as a favorite and 4-0 ATS versus a team with a losing record. Colorado State is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 Thursday games and 5-2 ATS in their last seven on turf.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are 9-1-1 ATS in their last 11 games as a home underdog and 19-6-1 ATS in their last 26 games as an underdog. Fresno State is 11-4-1 ATS in their last 16 games in October and 1-4 ATS in their last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Colorado State in this one. Fresno was able to keep pace with Hawaii in the first half, taking a 17-13 deficit into the break. The Bulldogs only scored six points from then on and also gave up a touchdown in every quarter. It may take a few series to work the kinks out, but I think Colorado State can similarly dictate the pace in this matchup.
