The East Carolina Pirates and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane meet in AAC college football action from Chapman Stadium on Friday night.
The East Carolina Pirates will look to rebound from a 1-3 start after a 27-23 loss to Navy in their last game to drop their conference record to 1-2 on the year. Holton Ahlers has thrown for 673 yards, 6 touchdowns and 4 interceptions on 57.1% passing while Rahjai Harris leads the Pirates in rushing with 330 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. Tyler Snead leads ECU with 20 catches for 194 yards while C.J. Johnson has 166 receiving yards and 3 TDs. Blake Proehl and Audie Omotosho each have 100+ receiving yards for East Carolina this season. Defensively, Xavier Smith leads East Carolina with 43 total tackles including 23 solo tackles while Josh Wilson is 2nd in total tackles with 29 along with a pair of sacks.
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will look to build on their 2-0 conference record and 2-1 mark overall after a 42-13 win over USF last time out. Zach Smith has thrown for 671 yards, 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions on 63% passing while Deneric Prince has a team-high 232 rushing yards and a pair of scores. Corey Taylor II has 128 rushing yards and a pair of TDs as well. Keylon Stokes leads Tulsa in receiving with 14 catches for 216 yards while Sam Crawford Jr. and Josh Johnson each have 100+ receiving yards for the Golden Hurricane as well this season. Defensively, Kendarin Ray and Zaven Collins each have a team-high 22 total tackles with Ray logging a team-high 20 solo tackles while Collins has 18 solo tackles with 3 sacks and a pair of interceptions.
East Carolina is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as a road underdog and 7-17 ATS in their last 24 road games while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a team with a winning record. Tulsa is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games as a home favorite while the under is 8-3 in their last 11 home games.
East Carolina comes in with the rest advantage, but the Pirates need a lot more than rest to fix the issues that they have with that porous defense. Tulsa has had it on defense all season long, it was just the offense that needed to come alive after the Oklahoma State game and it did that against UCF and then USF. I’m a bit weary laying this number with a Tulsa team that’s scoring just 27.7 points per game, but backing an East Carolina team that’s giving up almost 38 points per game isn’t an option for me. It’s a lean, but I’ll lay the points with Tulsa in this one.
