The Boston College Eagles and the Clemson Tigers meet Saturday in Week 9 ACC college football action from Clemson Memorial Stadium.
Boston College enters this one at 4-2 on the year. The Eagles have fallen versus North Carolina and Virginia Tech but otherwise beaten Duke, Texas State, Pitt and Georgia Tech this season. As for Clemson, they’re rolling along at 6-0 so far. The Tigers have recorded wins over Wake Forest, the Citadel, Virginia, Miami, Georgia Tech and Syracuse in succession. Boston College’s record looks pretty solid so far, but the team has already had a couple of close escapes and some heartbreak. The Eagles have two wins by three points or fewer and fell in a tough one 26-22 to North Carolina on October 3. Boston College’s last outing went well however: a 48-27 win over Georgia Tech.
In the win over the Jackets, Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec posted 145 yards and two touchdowns while also leading the rush with seven carries for 94 yards. Tops in the receiving game for the Eagles there was CJ Lewis, who finished on four catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns.
Over on the Clemson side, there’s not a whole lot to complain about. The Tigers have steamrolled everyone they’ve faced so far, scoring at least 37 points in every game and 41 or more in each of their last five. Clemson destroyed Georgia Tech 73-7 a couple weeks back and continued that run with a 47-21 win over Syracuse last weekend. Trevor Lawrence won't be playing this week as he has been diagnosed with Covid-19 but they are in more than capable hands.
In the victory over the Orange, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence managed 289 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Amari Rodgers had eight catches for 91 yards to lead the receivers, and Travis Etienne had 86 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries.
The Eagles are 21-6-1 ATS in their last 28 conference games and 22-8 ATS in their last 30 in October. Boston College is 13-6 ATS in their last 19 road games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games after an ATS win.
Meanwhile, the Tigers are 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games in October and 11-4 ATS versus a team with a winning record. Clemson is 5-2 ATS in their last seven after an ATS loss and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games on grass.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Boston College here. Clemson should still win this game by a significant margin, but the spread isn’t as hefty as some of the other matchups. The Eagles are good enough to eat up some clock and bag a few scores against the Tigers—likely not enough to get close but enough to cover. If Boston College can string together some first downs and sustain a little momentum I think they can get in there.
