The Arizona State Sun Devils and the USC Trojans meet Saturday in week 10 Pac-12 Conference college football action from LA Memorial Coliseum as the Pac-12 season gets underway.
This will be the first game of the 2020 college football season for both Arizona State and USC. The Sun Devils went 8-5 last year with a 4-5 record in the Pac-12 Conference. As for USC, they finished at 8-5 as well with a 7-2 mark in the Pac-12. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
Arizona State had a pretty successful season overall in 2019, and the 4-5 conference record was good enough for a third-place finish in a tough South Division. The Sun Devils started out at 5-1, but then went on a four-game losing streak that basically ended any shot at a division title. The good news is that Arizona State finished with a 20-14 Sun Bowl win over Florida State to end on a high note.
This year, Arizona State brings back head coach Herm Edwards in his third season. We’ll get some new looks at coordinators this year, with a trio of new faces. Zak Hill will take over the offensive coordinator duties, while fellow first-year men Marvin Lewis and Antonio Pierce take over on defense.
Over on the USC side, they had a better season conference-wise in 2019 with a 7-2 mark, but the campaign still ended in disappointment. The Trojans finished one game behind Utah for the South Division championship but still earned a spot in the Holiday Bowl. USC faced Iowa in that one, and the loss wasn’t even close at 49-24.
Moving on to 2020, USC gets Clay Helton back at the helm as head coach in his fifth season. Offensive coordinator Graham Harrell returns for his second year, and Todd Orlando takes over as defensive coordinator. This will be Orlando’s first season in that position, so we’ll see what kind of looks he can bring to the Trojans’ defense.
Arizona State is 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games as an underdog and 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 on grass. The Sun Devils are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five games in November and 1-4-1 ATS in their last six conference games.
Meanwhile, the Trojans are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five games in November. USC is 1-3-1 ATS in their last five games on grass and the over is 6-0 in their last six overall.
PICK: I’m tentatively taking USC here, but this one could be tricky. It’s been a weird offseason obviously, and it’ll take a few games for us to figure out what the Pac-12 could potentially look like in 2020. That said, the Trojans have all the pieces in place on paper, led by Kedon Slovis at QB. Slovis will be a conference MVP favorite this year, and if he can lead the offense out of the gate strong he’ll be getting even more national coverage as the season progresses. This should be a great matchup.
