The FIU Panthers and the UTEP Miners meet Saturday in college football action from the Sun Bowl.
FIU enters this game at 0-3 so far this season. The Panthers have fallen to Liberty, Middle Tennessee and Jacksonville State in their first trio of outings. As for UTEP, they’re 3-3 this year. The Miners have lost their last two games versus Louisiana Tech and Charlotte. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
FIU’s record looks pretty bad so far, but the team has been competitive. The Panthers fell by just two points 36-34 to Liberty in the opener, and were within a field goal of Middle Tennessee in another tough loss 31-28. FIU was within striking distance of Jacksonville State going into the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell in a 19-10 defeat.
In the Jacksonville State game, FIU quarterback Stone Norton posted 66 yards and a score on 5-of-14 passing. D’Vonte Price led the rush with nine carries for 48 yards, and Nate Jefferson caught two balls for 38 yards and a score.
Over on the UTEP side, they’ve been pretty erratic this season so far. The Miners opened up with a nice 3-1 record, the only misstep being a 59-3 blowout against a powerful Texas team. Since then it’s been two consecutive losses for UTEP, 21-17 versus Louisiana Tech and 38-28 versus Charlotte.
In the loss to the 49ers, UTEP quarterback Gavin Hardison managed 204 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Deion Hankins added 119 yards and a score on 18 carries, while Justin Garrett led the receivers on nine catches for 107 yards and two scores.
The Panthers are 5-2 ATS in their last seven in November and 12-5 ATS in their last 17 as an underdog. FIU is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 overall and 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games.
Meanwhile, the Miners are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games as a favorite and 8-23 ATS in their last 31 on turf. UTEP is 7-19 ATS in their last 26 home games and 5-11 ATS versus a team with a losing record.
PICK: I’m sticking with UTEP here. FIU has shown a strong desire to run so far this season, and when that rush game is working it’s quite effective (Price posted 148 rushing yards and two scores in the opener). The thing is, UTEP is a pretty good scoring team and when the offense is clicking they can push the ball down the field through the air. If the Miners get up early in this one it’s going to be hard for the Panthers to close the gap.
