The North Alabama Lions and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles meet Saturday in college football action from Roberts Stadium.
North Alabama is winless at 0-2 so far this season. The Lions fell to Liberty in their opener and then lost to Jacksonville State back on October 17 in their most recent appearance. As for Southern Miss, they’re 1-5 this year. The Golden Eagles have lost their last two games to Liberty and Rice. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
North Alabama has been pretty sketchy in their limited action so far this season, falling 28-7 to Liberty and 24-17 to Jacksonville State. The Lions didn’t score their touchdown until the fourth quarter against the Flames, and it was cosmetic. North Alabama was down 21-0 heading into that final quarter.
The Lions looked better in the save-point loss to Jacksonville State, but couldn’t keep up after halftime and lost their initial 10-7 lead pretty quickly. North Alabama quarterback Blake Dever posted 202 yards with an interception in that game, and Blake Dever had 10 carries for 23 yards. Tops in receiving was Corson Swan with four catches for 57 yards.
Over on the Southern Miss side, they’ve had some issues giving up points this season, and it’s resulted in just one victory so far: a 41-31 outing over North Texas. Since then, the Golden Eagles have allowed 86 combined points in two games to Liberty (56-35) and Rice (30-6).
In the loss to Rice last weekend, Southern Miss quarterback Jack Abraham posted 112 yards and an interception on 12-of-17 passing. Frank Gore Jr. led the rushing attack on 71 yards from 11 carries, and Antoine Robinson put up 41 yards from three receptions.
The Lions are 4-0 ATS in their last four games as an underdog and 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall. North Alabama is 4-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games and 4-1 ATS in their last five after posting less than 100 rush yards in their previous game.
Meanwhile, Southern Miss is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games in November and 1-5 ATS in their last six games after an ATS loss. The Eagles are 1-8 ATS in their last nine games overall and 0-5 ATS in their last five games on turf.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Southern Miss as the lesser of two evils here, but there’s not much to like about this game. The Golden Eagles can score under the right circumstances; they’ve posted 21 or more in five of six games. North Alabama has made some progress over their two games, but all in all the Lions have been pretty uninspiring. Southern Miss has a good opportunity for a win and cover in this one.
