This game has been canceled. The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs and Charlotte 49ers meet Saturday in week 11 college football action at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs will play their first and only game of the 2020 season, and they’re coming off a three-win season last year. The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs have lost six of their last seven road games. Jordan Smith should get the nod at quarterback after 82 pass attempts and five touchdowns in the backup role. Izaiah Gathings and Devron Harper returns as a wide receiver duo that combined for nearly 1,700 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns. Narii Gaither should get more carries at running back after averaging 8.7 yards per carry on 16 touches. Defensively, Darien Reynolds returns after leading Gardner-Webb with 128 tackles, Janathian Turner led the Bulldogs with 2.5 sacks and Kobe Rodgers had six pass deflections. The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs should be n a good spot defensively and have enough playmakers to be effective on the offensive side. A lot of the success for the Bulldogs will come down to how solid the replacement of quarterback Kalen Whitlow will be, as you’re talking about somebody who threw for 20 touchdowns last season.
The Charlotte 49ers haven’t played in a couple of weeks but are still looking to get back to a .500 record. The Charlotte 49ers have won four straight home games. Chris Reynolds is completing 58.2 percent of his passes for 1,100 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. Reynolds has one or less touchdown passes in five of his last eight games. Victor Tucker and Micaleous Elder have combined for 534 receiving yards and two touchdowns while Cameron Dollar has nine receptions. The Charlotte 49ers ground game is averaging 168 yards per contest, and Tre Harbison III leads the way with 257 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Charlotte is allowing 31.6 points and 416.2 yards per game. Tyler Murray leads the Charlotte 49ers with 42 tackles, Romeo McKnight has 1.5 sacks and Ben DeLuca has one interception.
The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs should be up for this game considering it's their first and only game of the season. I expect Gardner-Webb to go all out and play with a high level of intensity. The Charlotte 49ers have had issues playing a consistent schedule due to COVID-19 issues, and they've been a below average team offensively in the games they have played, while the defense has been one of the worst in CFB at stopping the run. Charlotte is going to be the obvious favorite because it's your typical FBS vs FCS and these lines are usually out of control. However, Charlotte at this big of a favorite doesn't make much sense to me. The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs will be up for this contest, and they put up a fight against Charlotte last year, scoring 28 points and averaging 4.5 yards per rush.
Give me the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs and the points.
