The Georgia State Panthers look to upset the Appalachian State Mountaineers as they meet in Sun Belt conference college football action from Kidd-Brewer Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Georgia State Panthers will try to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their six games this season following a 52-34 win over UL-Monroe to improve to 3-3 this season. Cornelius Brown IV has thrown for 1,188 yards, 12 touchdowns and 5 interceptions on 59.5% passing while Dustin Coates leads Georgia State with 536 rushing yards and 5 TDs. Tucker Gregg has 262 rushing yards and Brown IV has 219 rushing yards with 5 touchdowns as well this season on the ground. Sam Pinckney leads Georgia State in receiving with 25 grabs for 377 yards and 5 touchdowns while Cornelius McCoy has 192 receiving yards and Roger Carter has 164 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns this season. Jamari Thrash and Terrance Dixon each have 100+ receiving yards as well this year. Defensively, Antavious Lane leads Georgia State with 41 total tackles including 34 solo tackles while Jordan Strachan has a team-high 5 sacks and Lane as well as Quavian White each have a pair of interception for the Panther defense this season.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers will look to build on their 5-1 overall record and 3-0 mark in conference play after a 38-17 win over Texas State last time out. Zac Thomas has thrown for 1,139 yards, 11 touchdowns and 4 interceptions on 65.5% passing while Daetrich Harrington leads App State in rushing with 595 rushing yards this season. Marcus Williams Jr. has 328 rushing yards and Cameron Peoples is just one yard shy of 300 rushing yards as well this season. Thomas Hennigan leads App State’s receiving group with 348 receiving yards while Malik Williams has a team-high 22 catches for 231 yards and Christian Wells has 161 receiving yards and a team-high 3 touchdowns this season. On defense, Trey Cobb leads the App State defense with 43 total tackles while Shaun Jolly has a team-high 18 solo tackles. Cobb and Demetrius Taylor each have a team-high 3 sacks while Brendan Harrington and Ryan Huff each have 3 interceptions this season.
Georgia State is 3-11-2 ATS in their last 16 road games and 4-10-2 ATS in their last 16 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 6-1 in their last 7 games overall. Appalachian State is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a win while the under is 5-1 in their last conference games. Georgia State is 1-5 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
Appalachian State I think is the better and more disciplined team, but this just has the stench of a look-ahead spot for App State with their massive game against Coastal Carolina on deck for the top spot in the East division and most likely a spot in the conference championship game. Georgia State’s defense is not very good and they just gave up 34 points to a bad Louisiana-Monroe team, but the Panthers have the offense to keep pace in this style of game. I’ll take a shot with Georgia State and the points in this one.
