The Western Carolina Catamounts and Liberty Flames meet Saturday in week 11 college football action at Williams Stadium in a FCS vs FBS matchup.
The Western Carolina Catamounts will make their season debut here and are coming off a three-win season. The Western Carolina Catamounts have lost five of their last six games. Will Jones should takeover at quarterback after 97 pass attempts last season as the backup. Daquan Patten and DJ Thorpe return as the top-two receivers, a duo that combined for more than 700 yards and three touchdowns. Donnavan Spencer is back after leading Western Carolina with 530 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Ty Harris returns after leading the Catamounts with 106 tackles, Jayden Pauling had 6.5 sacks and Ronald Kent had seven pass deflections. The Western Carolina Catamounts have proven offensive weapons and return enough playmakers on defense to be respectable this season, but the true answers will come at the quarterback position. Jones has a few starts and 60 career pass attempts, so he’s not completely green, but now we’ll see if he’s ready for a larger role.
The Liberty Flames look to remain undefeated while improving to 8-0 on the season. The Liberty Flames have won nine straight home games. Malik Willis is completing 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,339 yards, 12 touchdowns and one interception. Willis and Chris Ferguson have combined for 15 touchdown passes this season. DJ Stubbs and Kevin Shaa have combined for 630 receiving yards and five touchdowns while CJ Yarbrough has 12 receptions. The Liberty Flames ground game is averaging 254.5 yards per contest, and Willis leads the way with 603 yards and seven touchdowns. Defensively, Liberty is allowing 23.3 points and 311.7 yards per game. Anthony Butler leads the Liberty Flames with 47 tackles, Durrell Johnson has six sacks and Marcus Haskins has one interception.
The Catamounts are 3-1-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games in November. The Flames are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games, 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games in November and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The over is 5-2 in Flames last 7 games overall. The over is 4-1 in Flames last 5 games in November.
The Western Carolina Catamounts will play their first game in nearly a full year and are going up against a red hot team on the road. Tough spot for Western Carolina. Given what Liberty has already done this season, this should be a rather routine victory. However, this line is a bit steep, especially when you consider this game is sandwiched between Virginia Tech and NC State. Talk about a potential trap game for the Liberty Flames. This is also a fairly big game for Western Carolina, as this program doesn't get to play ranked FBS teams all that often, so the Catamounts should be up for it, even if chances of winning are slim to none.
Still, I'll take a shot with Western Carolina and the boatload of points.
