The South Alabama Jaguars look to pull the upset as they visit the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns in Sun Belt conference college football action from Cajun Field on Saturday afternoon.
The South Alabama Jaguars will look to rebound from back-to-back losses after a 23-6 defeat at the hands of Coastal Carolina last time out. Desmond Trotter has thrown for 1,187 yards, 8 touchdowns and 2 picks on 70.1% passing while Chance Lovertich has 607 passing yards, 5 touchdowns and 2 INTs on 56.4% passing. Carlos Davis leads USA’s rushing group with 586 rushing yards while Jalen Tolbert leads the Jags’ receiving group with 39 catches for 602 receiving yards and 5 TDs and Kawaan Baker has 528 receiving yards on 35 catches with a team-high 6 scores. Jalen Wayne also has 22 catches for 330 yards this season. Defensively, Riley Cole leads USA with 68 total tackles including 38 solo tackles while Keith Callmon has a team-high 40 solo tackles this season. Cole and Jeremiah Littles each have a pair of sacks as well for USA this season.
The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns will try to build on their 6-1 record including a 4-1 mark in conference play after a 3rd straight win in the form of a 27-20 win over Arkansas State last time out. Levi Lewis has thrown for 1,628 yards, 10 touchdowns and 6 INTs on 60.2% passing while Elijah Mitchell leads Louisiana in rushing with 502 rushing yards and 5 TDs and Trey Ragas has 444 rushing yards and a team-high 6 rushing TDs this season. Chris Smith and Lewis each have 100+ rushing yards for the Cajuns this season. Peter LeBlanc leads Louisiana with 18 catches for 300 yards while Jalen Williams and Kyren Lacy each have 200+ receiving yards and 2 TDs this season. Defensively, Lorenzo McCaskill leads Louisiana with 61 total tackles while Ferrod Gardner leads the Cajuns with 34 solo tackles as well as 3 sacks and Bralen Trahan has a team-high 3 interceptions this season as does Eric Garror, who also has 3 picks for ULL this year.
South Alabama is 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 games overall and 10-3-1 ATS in their last 14 conference games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 road games. Louisiana is 0-7 ATS in their last 7 conference games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall while the under is 7-0 in their last 7 home games. The home team is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams. Home field has mattered here as the home team’s covered in 6 of the last 8 meetings, but the issue for me is that Louisiana almost seems incapable of covering the number in conference play as they’ve failed to cover in 7 straight conference games dating back to last season as well as going 0-3 ATS at home this season. Louisiana’s the team that’s going to win you games, but they’re not going to do it pretty and are going to have a hard time covering the number. South Alabama snuck in for the cover against Coastal and I think against Louisiana, getting two scores is a ton considering that ULL hasn’t won a game by more than ten points at all this season. I’ll take South Alabama and the points in this one.
