Northern Illinois has had a rough go of things so far. The Huskies lost their first game 49-30 to Buffalo, and the game wasn’t that close. Northern Illinois quarterback Ross Bowers posted 202 yards with one TD and one interception in the loss, and Harrison Waylee added 66 rushing yards on 13 carries. Tyrice Richie led the receivers with nine catches for 106 yards.
The Central Michigan game ended up as a 40-10 loss for Northern Illinois to bring the team to 0-2 on the year. Bowers managed 139 yards on 16-of-32 passing in that one, and Erin Collins had 43 yards on 15 carries. Richie led the receivers again with seven catches for 70 yards.
Over on the Ball State side, they opened up with a loss to Miami-OH 38-31 in a tough result. Cardinals quarterback Drew Plitt posted 309 yards with one TD and one INT, and Justin Hall caught four passes for 124 yards and a score. Caleb Huntley led the rush there with 130 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.
Ball State got a win their last time out: 38-31 over Eastern Michigan. Plitt posted 232 yards with one TD and one pick, and Antwan Davis caught seven passes for 69 yards. Huntley went off again in that one, rushing 34 times for 204 yards and three scores.
The Huskies are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games after an ATS loss and 4-1 ATS in their last five after a straight-up loss. Northern Illinois is 35-16-2 ATS in their last 53 road games and the over is 4-0 in their last four road games.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 2-5 ATS in their last seven after a straight-up win and 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games. Ball State is 1-4 ATS in the last five overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five in November.
PICK: I’m sticking with Ball State here. The Cardinals have had a couple of pretty tough—and close—games so far, and they’ve showcased some pretty intriguing offensive potential (especially in the running game). NIU hung around with Buffalo for a while but really couldn’t get it going in the Central Michigan game. I think the Huskies will look a little better here but I still like Ball State on the cover.
