The winless UMass Minutemen and the surging Florida Atlantic Owls meet Friday Night in college football action from FAU Stadium in Boca Raton.
UMass enters this game at 0-2 on the college football season. The Minutemen have lost to Georgia Southern and Marshall so far. As for Florida Atlantic, they’re 4-1 this season. The Owls have won three straight games versus UTSA, Western Kentucky and FIU. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
UMass hasn’t exactly gotten off to a great start this year. The Minutemen were destroyed by Georgia Southern in their opening game 41-0. UMass quarterback Mike Fallon posted 41 yards and a pick in that one, and Will Koch led the rush with 41 yards on four carries. Samuel Emilus was the top Minutemen receiver there with four catches for 28 yards.
Game two didn’t go well for the Minutemen either; a 51-10 dismantling at the hands of Marshall. Koch passed for 99 yards and a TD in that game, and Ellis Merriwether posted 31 rush yards on 10 carries. Taylor Edwards’ 37-yard reception put him atop the UMass receivers as well.
Over on the Florida Atlantic side, they’ve had a couple of tough wins, a couple of comparatively easy wins, and a rough 20-9 loss to Marshall this season. The Owls managed a nice performance in their most recent game last weekend, though; 38-19 in a big win over FIU.
In the victory over the Panthers, Florida Atlantic quarterback Javion Posey threw for 80 yards and two touchdowns on 10-of-16 passing, and also led the team rush with 182 yards and a score on 18 carries. Malcolm Davidson (nine carries; 88 yards; TD) and James Charles (seven carries; 58 yards; TD) contributed a big chunk to the running game there as well.
The Minutemen are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games on grass and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games overall. UMass is 2-5 ATS in their last seven Friday games and 2-6 ATS in their last eight road games.
Meanwhile, the Owls are 5-1 ATS in their last six games after a straight-up win and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games overall. Florida Atlantic is 5-2 ATS in their last seven home games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games in November.
PICK: I’m sticking with Florida Atlantic here. Granted, the Owls have had some dud games on the scoreboard so far, but they’re also showcasing some pretty good defensive capabilities. Considering UMass has been outscored 92-10 across their two games, I’m not expecting a sudden flurry of offense from the Minutemen. Florida Atlantic should be able to stretch their legs in this one and bang out a cover, even with the super-thick line.
