The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers host the FIU Panthers Saturday in college football action from Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium in Kentucky.
FIU enters this game winless at 0-4 so far. The Panthers have fallen to Liberty, Middle Tennessee, Jacksonville State and Florida Atlantic this season. As for Western Kentucky, they’re 3-6 this year. The Hilltoppers had lost consecutive games going into last weekend before eking out a win over Southern Miss. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
FIU’s 0-4 record looks pretty bad on the surface, but there are some positives here if you look closer. The Panthers hung in there with Liberty 36-34 in the opener, then were within three points of Middle Tennessee and nine of Jacksonville State. FIU’s only bad loss was 38-19 versus Florida Atlantic on Friday.
In the loss to the Owls, FIU quarterback Max Bortenschlager had 149 yards with one touchdown, and D’Vonte Price led the rush on 178 yards and a score from 26 carries. Rivaldo Fairweather had seven catches for 116 yards and a score as well.
Over on the Hilltoppers’ side, it’s been quite the up-and-down campaign so far, but there have been some positives on the field. Western Kentucky has held opponents to 10 points or fewer in three of the last four games. Trouble is, the Hilltoppers haven’t scored more than 13 points themselves in any of those games.
In last weekend’s 10-7 escape over Southern Miss, Western Kentucky quarterback Tyrell Pigrome posted 183 yards and a rushing touchdown, while Xavier Lane led the receivers with 90 yards on five catches. Jakairi Moses topped the rush with 40 yards off 12 carries.
The Panthers are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games in November and 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games. FIU is 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five on turf.
Meanwhile the Hilltoppers are 6-2 ATS in their last eight after an ATS win and 5-2 ATS in their last seven games in November. Western Kentucky is 2-8-1 ATS in their last 11 overall and 1-5 ATS in their last six conference games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Western Kentucky here, but in reality I’m probably staying away from this matchup. The Panthers have scored just 29 combined points over their last two games, and gave up 38 to Florida Atlantic in their last outing alone. The Hilltoppers don’t score much, but if they can tamp down the FIU offense just enough, I can see Western Kentucky getting in there for a cover.
