UTEP started out the season at a pretty solid 3-1 mark—the lone loss being against Texas. Since then it’s been three straight losses for the Miners, first 21-17 against LA Tech, then 38-28 versus Charlotte. UTEP’s latest defeat came November 14, 52-21 against UTSA.
In the loss to the Roadrunners, UTEP quarterback Gavin Hardison put up 159 yards and a touchdown, while Jacob Cowing led the receivers on 58 yards and a score from two catches. Deion Hankins was the top rusher there, with 16 carries for 74 yards and a touchdown.
Over on the Rice side, it’s been a pretty mixed bag of results so far. The Owls opened up with a tight 40-34 overtime loss to Middle Tennessee, but then managed a huge win over Southern Miss 30-6. In Rice’s most recent game this past weekend, they fell to North Texas 27-17 to drop below .500.
In the loss to North Texas, Rice quarterback Michael Collins posted 327 yards with two touchdowns on 23-of-34 passing, and Khalan Griffin led the rush with 72 yards on 20 carries. Austin Trammell was the top Owls receiver there on 116 yards and a TD from six catches.
The Miners are 7-15 ATS in their last 22 games overall and 5-11 ATS versus a team with a losing record. UTEP is 2-5 ATS in their last seven games on turf and 3-12-2 ATS in their last 17 games in November.
Meanwhile, the Owls are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games in November and 25-12-1 ATS versus a team with a losing record. Rice is 6-13-1 ATS in their last 20 home games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games after a straight-up loss.
PICK: I’m going to go with Rice here. Considering UTEP’s last three outings, it’s tough for me to trust them. The Miners have been outscored 111-66 during this losing streak, giving up at least 38 points in each of their last two games. It’s a pretty small sample size, but Rice has shown they can get into the end zone this season, and I think they’ll have some scoring opportunities against the Miners.
