The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers and the Charlotte 49ers meet Tuesday in college football action from Jerry Richardson Stadium.
Western Kentucky comes into this one at 4-6 on the year. The Hilltoppers have won their last two games, taking out Southern Miss and FIU in that pair. As for Charlotte, they’re 2-3 this season. The 49ers had consecutive wins going before falling to Duke in their last outing on Halloween. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
Western Kentucky hasn’t been much of a scoring team this season, but they’ve won a handful of games with good defensive efforts. The Hilltoppers scored a max of 24 points through their first nine games, going 3-6 during that time. That said, Western Kentucky posted 38 points in a 17-point win over FIU this past weekend.
In the win over the Panthers, Western Kentucky quarterback Tyrell Pigrome threw for 121 yards on 14-of-25 passing and scored two rushing touchdowns. Gaej Walker led the rush with 127 yards and a TD on 17 carries, and Mitchell Tinsley caught three balls for 28 yards.
Over on the Charlotte side, they’ve been all over the place this year. The 49ers opened up with losses 35-20 to Appalachian State and 21-17 to Florida Atlantic before notching two nice wins 49-21 over North Texas and 38-28 over UTEP. Charlotte fell big in their last game however, 53-19 to Duke.
In the loss to the Blue Devils, Charlotte quarterback Chris Reynolds posted 171 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-34 passing. Tre Harbison led the ground attack with 57 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, and Micaleous Elder posted six catches for 86 yards.
The Hilltoppers are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 road games and 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight games on turf. Western Kentucky is 2-5 ATS in their last seven conference games and 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 overall.
Meanwhile, Charlotte is 4-1 ATS in their last five conference games and 4-1 ATS in their last five games in November. The 49ers are 8-3 ATS versus a team with a losing record and the over is 4-1 in their last five games in November.
PICK: I’m going with Western Kentucky here, but probably staying away in reality. Charlotte has had some scoring consistency issues this season as well, as they’ve put up 20 or fewer points in three of their five games. The Hilltoppers probably won’t be lighting up the scoreboard here either, so it’s likely going to be a lower-scoring, clock-control type game. I like Western Kentucky’s defense better in a scenario like that.
