The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and the FIU Panthers meet Saturday in college football action from FIU Stadium.
Louisiana Tech comes into this one at 4-3 on the year. The Bulldogs had consecutive losses going before getting an overtime win versus UAB in their last outing on Halloween. As for FIU, they’re 0-5 this season. The Panthers have lost to Liberty, Middle Tennessee, Jacksonville State, Florida Atlantic and Western Kentucky in succession. Louisiana Tech has experienced the gamut of results this season, from blowout wins, blowout losses, tight victories and narrow defeats. The Bulldogs fell to Marshal 35-17 a few games back, then took a tough 27-26 loss to UTSA in their next outing. LA Tech got back into the win column against UAB however, toughing out a 37-34 double-overtime victory.
In the win over UAB, Louisiana Tech quarterbacks Aaron Allen and Luke Anthony combined for 332 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Israel Tucker led the rush with 54 yards on 17 carries, and Adrian Hardy topped the receivers with seven catches for 101 yards and two scores.
Over on the FIU side, there’s not much to get excited about in the 0-5 start, but there are a few positives if you look for them. The Panthers were close in their first two games, falling 36-34 to Liberty and 31-20 to Middle Tennessee. The margins of defeat have been worse lately though: 19-10 to Jacksonville State, 38-19 to Florida Atlantic and 38-21 to Western Kentucky.
In the loss to the Hilltoppers, FIU quarterback Max Bortenschlager managed 106 yards, one TD and one INT on 8-of-18 passing. JJ Holloman led the receivers with two grabs for 54 yards and a TD, and D’Vonte Price had 24 carries for an even 100 yards.
The Bulldogs are 5-1 ATS versus a team with a losing record and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games after a straight-up win. Louisiana Tech is 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall and the under is 8-1 in their last nine in November.
Meanwhile, the Panthers are 1-5 ATS in their last six home games and 1-7 ATS in their last eight conference games. FIU is 0-4 ATS in their last four on turf and 0-4 ATS in their last four overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Louisiana Tech here. The Bulldogs have been pretty inconsistent when it comes to scoring this season, and there was a three-game stretch where they scored a combined 52 points. The scoreboard difficulties seem to come against the tougher teams however; the Bulldogs are far more successful against comparable competition. It’s been a long layoff, but I think Louisiana Tech can get right back into the offensive swing of things on a cover here.
