The UTEP Miners face off with the North Texas Mean Green in C-USA college football action from Apogee Stadium in El Paso on Friday Night.
The North Texas Mean Green will try to rebound from back-to-back losses after a 42-31 loss to Louisiana Tech last time out. Austin Aune has thrown for 1,348 yards, 8 touchdowns and 4 interceptions on 54.5% passing while Jason Bean’s tossed for 880 yards, 12 touchdowns and 4 interceptions on 53.7% passing. DeAndre Torrey leads the North Texas ground attack with 636 yards and 6 touchdowns while Oscar Adaway III has 410 rushing yards and the aforementioned Bean has 343 rushing yards and 5 TDs. Jaelon Darden leads North Texas’ receiving group with 66 grabs for 1,017 yards and 15 touchdowns while Deonte Simpson has 414 receiving yards and Austin Ogunmakin has 210 receiving yards. North Texas has another three receivers with at least 100+ receiving yards this season. On defense, KD Davis leads North Texas in receiving with 69 total tackles with 3 sacks as well while Makyle Sanders has 50 total tackles with a team-high 33 solo tackles and Larry Nixon III has 3 sacks for the Mean Green. Grayson Murphy also has 3 sacks while Gabriel Murphy has a team-high 3.5 sacks.
The UTEP Miners will come into this one rested or rusty after having their last three games cancelled due to COVID issues. Gavin Hardison has thrown for 1,419 yards, 5 touchdowns and 5 interceptions on 54.3% passing while Deion Hankins has rushed for a team-high 493 yards and 7 touchdowns. Joshua Field has 200 rushing yards and Ronald Awaff has 111 rushing yards this season. Jacob Cowing has a team-high 573 receiving yards while Justin Garrett has 498 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns. Devaughn Cooper and Walter Dawn Jr. each have 100+ receiving yards as well this season. Stephen Forester leads the UTEP defense with 56 total tackles including 28 solo tackles while Praise Amaewhule has a team-high 7 sacks and Duron Lowe has a pair of interceptions for the Miner defense this season.
North Texas is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games in December while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games on turf. UTEP is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games in December and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games against a team with a losing road record while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 conference games.
Would I be surprised if UTEP cancelled this one because of COVID too? Not really, but operating on the assumption that this game is going, it’s hard to know what to expect from UTEP after not playing in almost a month. North Texas has been up and down, but they’re at least playing games more recently and are in game shape which we’re not sure we can say for UTEP. North Texas was also a really good offensive team to begin with and the potential rust for UTEP is likely a bad combination. I’ll lay the points with North Texas in this spot.
