The Marshall Thundering Herd face off with the UAB Blazers in the C-USA championship game from Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Friday night.
The UAB Blazers will participate in their 3rd straight C-USA title game and are hoping to lift the trophy for the first time since 2018 after finishing the regular season with a 5-3 record. Bryson Lucero threw for 969 yards, 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions on 54.1% passing while Tyler Johnston III had 591 yards on 60% passing with 5 touchdowns and an interception. Spencer Brown added a team-high 740 rushing yards with 10 rushing TDs while DeWayne McBride added 396 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns and Jermaine Brown Jr. chipped in 236 rushing yards. Austin Watkins Jr. led UAB’s receiving group with 34 catches for 468 yards and 3 scores and Myron Mitchell has 27 grabs for 423 yards with 3 TDs as well. Hayden Pittman has 205 receiving yards while Trea Stropshire and Gerrit Prince each have 100+ receiving yards with Prince logging 4 touchdowns for the Blazers this season. On defense, Kristopher Moll leads the Blazers with 54 total tackles including a team-high 39 solo tackles while Jordan Smith has a team-high 4.5 sacks for UAB this season.
The Marshall Thundering Herd enter the C-USA title game for the first time since 2014 after finishing with a conference-best 7-1 record. Grant Wells has thrown for 1,839 yards, 16 touchdowns and 9 interceptions on 63.4% passing while Brenden Knox leads the Herd in rushing with 820 rushing yards and 9 TDs and Sheldon Evans has 239 rushing yards with 4 scores this season. Xavier Gaines leads Marshall’s receiving group with 328 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns while Corey Gammage has a team-high 27 grabs for 304 yards and 4 touchdowns. Artie Henry, Willie Johnson and Broc Thompson all have 200+ receiving yards for the Herd as well this season. On defense, Tavante Beckett leads Marshall with 77 total tackles including a team-high 29 solo tackles and 2.5 sacks while Darius Hodge has a team-high 6 sacks for Marshall this season.
UAB is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games as an underdog while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 games following a win. Marshall is 6-17 ATS in their last 23 home games and 4-14 ATS in their last 18 games as a home favorite while the over is 10-4 in their last 14 home games. UAB is 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams at Marshall.
The points are tempting as UAB has the conference championship game experience and pedigree from it being their third straight year in the conference title game. However, even with the shock loss to Rice, Marshall’s been the team to beat in C-USA this year and I just think the Herd are more than capable of taking this one by at least a touchdown, so I’ll lay the points with the Thundering Herd of Marshall in this one.
