The Liberty Flames come into the bowl game on the heels of a stellar 2020 season, finishing with a 9-1 overall record, including a massive upset win over Virginia Tech with the lone blemish coming against NC State by a final score of 15-14. Malik Willis has thrown for 2,040 yards, 20 touchdowns and 4 interceptions on 64% passing while also leading the Flames in rushing with 807 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. Joshua Mack has 692 rushing yards with 4 TDs and Peytton Pickett has 505 rushing yards with 6 touchdowns. Shedro Louis also has 431 rushing yards and 3 scores while DJ Stubbs leads Liberty’s receiving group with 33 grabs for 455 yards and 3 TDs. Kevin Shaa was 2nd with 415 receiving yards and Demario Douglas had 27 catches for 312 yards with Shaa logging 4 TDs and Douglas 3. CJ Yarbrough, CJ Daniels and Noah Frith each had 200+ receiving yards as well for Liberty this season. On defense, Javon Scruggs led the Flames with 61 total tackles including 32 solo tackles while Durrell Johnson has a team-high 8 sacks and Tre’Shaun Clark has 4.5 sacks this season.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers come into this bowl game looking to put the cherry on top of a dream season, finishing the regular season 11-0, including wins over BYU, App State and Louisiana-Lafayette. Grayson McCall has thrown for 2,170 yards, 23 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on 69.3% passing while finishing 2nd in rushing with 473 rushing yards and 8 TDs. CJ Marable had 844 rushing yards with 12 touchdowns while Reese White has 377 rushing yards and 3 scores. Jaivon Heiligh had 52 catches for 820 yards and 10 scores while Isaiah Likely had 517 receiving yards with 4 TDs and Kameron Brown had 306 yards with 3 scores. Sam Denmark has 267 receiving yards while the aforementioned CJ Marable has 220 receiving yards on 30 catches with 7 receiving touchdowns as well this year. I’m glad that we end up getting to see this matchup after it was supposed to happen in the regular season before COVID had other plans for it. With that said, I like what I’ve seen from both offensive units this season, and while both have good defenses, I think we both sides open up the playbooks for the bowl game and give us a game to remember. The total set at 59.5 seems low with what both are capable of offensively, so give me the over in this spot.
