The South Carolina Gamecocks and the UAB Blazers meet Saturday in college football action from Raymond James Stadium.
Entering this Gasparilla Bowl matchup, the Gamecocks sit at 2-8 overall. South Carolina has lost their last six straight games, falling to Georgia and Kentucky in their last pair. As for UAB, they’re 6-3 this season. The Blazers have won consecutive games over Rice and Marshall. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
South Carolina hasn’t had much luck in the win column this season, but they’ve competed well against a few tough teams on the schedule. The Gamecocks’ only wins this year came over Vanderbilt 41-7 and Auburn 30-22. Since then it’s been losses 52-24 to LSU, 48-3 to Texas A&M, 59-42 to Mississippi, 17-10 to Missouri, 45-16 to Georgia and 41-18 to Kentucky.
In the loss to the Wildcats, South Carolina quarterback Luke Doty managed 85 yards with one TD and one interception. Dakereon Joyner led the receivers on four catches for 43 yards and a score, while Kevin Harris rushed for 210 yards and a score on 21 carries.
Over on the UAB side, it’s been a wild ride this year. The Blazers opened up the season at 4-1 before a tough 24-20 loss to Louisiana. Another difficult loss in overtime 37-34 to LA Tech followed, but UAB has notched wins 21-16 over Rice and 22-13 over Marshall in the two games since.
In the win over the Herd, UAB quarterback Tyler Johnston posted 252 yards with two scores, and Spencer Brown rushed 30 times for 149 yards. Trea Shropshire posted five catches for 180 yards and a TD to lead the receivers.
South Carolina is 4-1 ATS in their last five bowl games and 6-2 ATS in their last eight neutral-site games. The Gamecocks are 0-6 ATS in their last six games overall and 1-5 ATS in their last six non-conference games.
Meanwhile, UAB is 6-1 ATS versus a team with a losing record and 6-14 ATS in their last 20 on grass. The Blazers are 0-5 ATS in their last five after an ATS win and 0-4 ATS in their last four versus the SEC.
PICK: I’m going to take a shot on South Carolina in this one. The Gamecocks haven’t looked good this season on paper, but they’ve had to play some of the tougher teams in the country as well. When South Carolina gets a manageable matchup they look much better, as with the 34-point win over Vanderbilt or the 42 points scored on Ole Miss. Overall UAB’s defense has been solid this year, and they should be able to land a few punches in this game. That said, if South Carolina can win the ball-control battle and get their RBs producing I think the Gamecocks can bang out a cover.
