The Indiana Hoosiers take on the Ole Miss Rebels Saturday, January 2 in the Outback Bowl college football action from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
Coming into this Outback Bowl matchup, Ole Miss sits at 4-5. The Rebels had a three-game winning streak snapped in their last matchup with a loss to LSU. As for the Hoosiers, they’re 6-1 this season. Following their lone loss to Ohio State, Indiana has taken out Maryland and Wisconsin in their last pair. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
Ole Miss has been all over the place this year, thanks mostly to some difficult matchups against very good schools. The Rebels started out the year at just 1-4, but then got wins 54-21 over Vanderbilt, 59-42 over South Carolina and 31-24 over Mississippi State. Ole Miss was edged by LSU in their last game December 19, however.
In the loss to the Tigers, Mississippi quarterback Matt Corral posted 251 yards and three scores on 15-of-27 passing, but also coughed up five picks. Corral also led the rush with 158 yards and a TD on 17 carries, while Braylon Sanders managed 70 yards and two TDs on four catches.
Over on the Indiana side, they’ve had a couple close escapes but have mostly gotten the job done. The Hoosiers opened with four straight wins over Penn State, Rutgers, Michigan and Michigan State. A 42-35 loss to Ohio State followed before two more wins 27-11 over Mayland and 14-6 over Wisconsin.
In the win over the Badgers, Indiana quarterback Jack Tuttle managed 130 yards and two scores on 13-of-22 passing. Whop Philyor caught four passes for 47 yards and a touchdown, and Stevie Scott led the rush with 18 carries for 57 yards.
The Rebels are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games in January and 5-0 ATS versus a team with a wining record. Mississippi is 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 neutral-site games and 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven bowl games.
Meanwhile, Indiana is 6-0 ATS in their last six after an ATS win and 4-1 ATS in the last five as a favorite. The Hoosiers are 2-5 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games and 4-1 ATS versus a team with a losing record.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Ole Miss. Indiana has proven themselves to be one of the top teams in the country this season, with just the one seven-point loss to a great Buckeyes team. The Hoosiers have stalled out a little bit on offense lately though, with 27 or fewer points in three of their last four games (and just 14 against Wisconsin in a game that was much closer than it should have been). Although I expect Indiana to score better here, I think Mississippi has the gas on offense to keep pace. The Rebels have notched 28 or more points in four straight, and 31 or more in each of their last three. Should be a high-scoring and fun game; I think Ole Miss can eke out a cover.
