The Davidson Wildcats and Elon Phoenix meet Saturday in week 2 FCS college football action at Rhodes Stadium.
The Davidson Wildcats are coming off an 8-4 record that included a 4-1 record on the road. The Davidson Wildcats averaged 35 points and 433.8 yards while allowing 20.7 points and 278.9 yards. Tyler Phelps returns at quarterback after throwing for 1,139 yards and win touchdowns on a 49.6 percent completion percentage. Eli Turner should takeover at running back with Davidson losing its top two rushers from last season, while Jalen Staples returns as the top receiver with 489 receiving yards and three touchdowns last year. Defensively, Davidson lost its top four tacklers from last year, but Jalen Jefferson is back with 50 tackles, Chibuike Odu had four sacks and Jaden Pask had one interception. The Davidson Wildcats have questions on defense, but having an experienced quarterback under center doesn't certainly help overall.
The Elon Phoenix finished 5-6 last season with a 2-3 record at home. The Elon Phoenix averaged 25 points and 320.4 yards while allowing 27 points and 386.7 yards. Davis Cheek returns at quarterback after throwing for 2,175 yards, 15 touchdowns and completing 57.9 percent of his passes. Kortez Weeks and Bryson Daughtry are back as a wide receiver tandem, a duo that combined for over 700 yards and six touchdowns, while Jaylen Thomas returns after leading the Phoenix with 415 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Cole Coleman is back after leading Elon with 84 tackles, Jamir Malone had 2.5 sacks and Tre’Von Jones had one interception. The Elon Phoenix return a lot of production from last season and have a chance to be ridiculously good offensively this season.
The Davidson Wildcats had a really good season, but outside of the quarterback position, they have some question marks on this roster and could struggle out of the gate defensively. The Elon Phoenix have a lot of familiar faces from a year ago and have the potential to be one of the bette offenses in the country during spring football. Oddsmakers are clearly high on Elon as well based off this line.
Thick line, especially when neither team has played in forever, but I'll lay it. I have high hopes for the Elon Phoenix this season.
